Posting Summary
Rutgers University Correctional Health Care ( UCHC) has several openings for a Forensic Mental Health Clinician to work within our Southern New Jersey facilities.
Reporting to the Clinician Supervisor, the Forensic Mental Health Clinician completes specialized psychological testing and assessment of clinical needs of adult inmates sentenced to the Department of Corrections.
Among the key duties for this position are the following:
  • Arrives at DSM IV diagnoses with precision and accuracy through psychological testing and evaluation sessions.
  • Provides crisis intervention, individual and group psychotherapy and psycho-education programming as clinically indicated to assigned inmates.
  • Involves inmates and Department of Corrections staff in developing achievable and understandable psychosocial treatment plans.
  • Advocates for appropriate resources for inmates based on assessed needs.
  • Manages caseload demands effectively while considering both qualities of care and the security needs of the Department of Corrections.
  • Assumes overall case management responsibilities for assigned inmates including coordination of treatment and liaison with community agencies; maintains appropriate inmate records.
  • Demonstrates competency in psychological testing and in recognizing the unique needs and behaviors of adult inmates and seniors.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Doctorate Degree in Psychology, experience and training in psychological testing and measurement.
  • Note: Psychologists at a Master's Level with experience in testing, are eligible for Mental Health Clinician II positions. The duties would otherwise be comparable to this position. Please see the Rutgers Job Board for any potential openings for UCHC Mental Health Clinician II.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Requires an unrestricted permit to practice Psychology in New Jersey (license) by the New Jersey Board of Psychological Examiners.
  • Valid driver's license.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
Preferred Qualifications Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to work at varying computer workstations provided by Rutgers in shared office environments. Ability to move from unit to unit within facilities requiring walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls. Lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds. Ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Able to function in a stressful environment and relate well to the patients, security staff and health care team members. A generally crisis oriented, secure environment working with adults, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening and assaultive behaviors. Must be able to handle emergency and crisis situations. Must exhibit flexibility to work in a variety of settings. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by NJ State Parole Board, NJ State Troopers or Rutgers.
Special Conditions
  • May be required to travel within the state.
  • On-call responsibilities.
  • Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.

Immunization Requirements

Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees, Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster upon eligibility and upload proof of same. Under Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals, if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Additional infection control and safety policies may apply. Prospective employees should speak with their hiring manager to determine which policies apply to the role or position for which they are applying. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain a medical or religious exemption from the University will result in rescission of a candidate's offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
