The Telephone Triage Nurse will work within the PSV Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders to receive and process telephone calls from patients and families requiring medical advice, results, symptom management, and general information.
Job description
- Interacts with patients and families via telephone and the electronic medical record to assess patient needs and concerns.
- Makes appropriate and timely recommendations to include advice and appointments per protocol and under the direction of medical provider.
- Documents all interactions and care provided in the electronic medical record. Utilizes order entry for diagnostic testing, prescription refills and other patient instructions requiring provider signature.
- Acts as a liaison with other departments and institutions to clarify questions related to the care of the patient such as obtaining orders and medical records.
- Demonstrates the ability to make quick decisions based on critical thinking skills, triage protocols, and knowledge of specific patient population.
- Assists patients and families in an efficient and empathetic manner to address their requests and concerns.
- Other duties as assigned for care coordination and patient/ family education as patient needs dictate.
Minimum Qualifications Required
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with a Bachelor of Nursing (BSN)
- Valid licensure in the state of Virginia as a Registered Nurse (RN) or ability to obtain license in Virginia
- One (1) year of recent Pediatric Hematology/Oncology or telephone triage experience
- Two (2) years of RN work experience
- BLS/CPR certification
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work independently and as a team player.
- Possesses self-initiative, creativity, and motivation.
- Ability to identify and troubleshoot conflicts.
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
- All employees must pass an employment TB, drug and physical exam
Desired Qualifications
- CPON or CPHON Certification
- APHON Chemotherapy / Biotherapy Provider certification
