The Challenge
We are hiring a Transportation Worker II to join our Bridge Maintenance team and work on projects in Greene, Jones, and Lenoir county.
In this role, you will:
- Maintain repair, and construct State-owned fixed and moveable bridges, culverts, and pipes 54" and larger.
- Operate a backhoe, excavator, and truck crane.
- Perform work that is technical and labor intensive that covers a wide variety of functional areas, including equipment operation; pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspection, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipes, bulkheads and pile clusters, sandblasting and painting, demolition work, welding, structure inspection, trenching and shoring, maintenance to ferry dock ramps, lead paint removal, steel fabrication, and steel beam repairs.
- Conduct flagging operations and apply proper traffic control techniques.

What You Bring
- Experience in installation of pipes and erosion control devices.
- Experience in the layout of traffic control in work zones.
- Working knowledge of standard Bridge Maintenance and construction procedures.
- Knowledge of work zone safety and NCDOT Workplace policies and procedures.
- Experience in 1+ of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, or snow/ice removal.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. (If you don't have this, still APPLY! You can get it within 360 days of hire through our on-the-job training program).
- Ability to work safely while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, in extreme heat and cold, and during inclement weather.
- Safety toe footwear.
- Ability to work in diverse working environments, including all types of weather, in, and around heavy equipment.
- Strength to safely lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently.
- Ability to work in a close environment or independently.
- Agility to climb.
Notes
- When bad weather occurs, you will be called upon to work nights/weekends to help in snow and ice removal.
- We will conduct a pre-employment drug test and a background check of your previous employers for the past 3 years for drug/alcohol abuse. We will also conduct a criminal background check.
Education & Experience
- High school/GED diploma, and
- 3+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
