Job description

The Montana Department of Transportation is recruiting a Travel Demand Modeler. This position is responsible for performing Travel Demand and other analyses for the Multimodal Bureau. Position is responsible for developing methods and procedures to analyze and forecast transportation and other impacts; develop and model hypothetical growth scenarios; conduct and coordinate transportation planning studies; and critically review and evaluate MDT planning activities to ensure consistency with federal and state requirements. Responsible for developing methodologies and procedures to forecast future travel in urban areas; design, document, and implement area-wide Travel Demand models; manage geo-database to process large scale input and output data; incorporate urban planning principles and mathematical and statistical estimation techniques; research industry practice on advanced land use and Travel Demand models; provide expertise, guidance, and assistance to local government planning agencies in the development and implementation of local comprehensive transportation plans. The position reports to the Section Supervisor and does not directly supervise others. This position is part of a career ladder with career advancement opportunities.

Required Education and Experience
:

Transportation Planner 1.1 (Planner II)

BA/BS in the following areas: Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Planning, Land Use Planning, Geology, Geography, Computer Information Systems, Business, Education, Public Administration, Finance, Accounting, Social or Physical Science, or Resource Management.

Transportation Planner 1.2 (Planner III)

BA/BS in the following areas: Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Planning, Land Use Planning, Geology, Geography, Computer Information Systems, Business, Education, Public Administration, Finance, Accounting, Social or Physical Science, or Resource Management AND 1 year of progressively responsible experience in planning, programming analysis, data collection and analysis, research, or another appropriate field.

Transportation Planner 2.1 (Planner IV)

BA/BS in the following areas: Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Planning, Land Use Planning, Geology, Geography, Computer Information Systems, Business, Education, Public Administration, Finance, Accounting, Social or Physical Science, or Resource Management AND 3 years of progressively responsible experience in planning, programming analysis, data collection and analysis, research, or another appropriate field.

Transportation Planner 3.0 (Planner V)

BA/BS in the following areas: Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Planning, Land Use Planning, Geology, Geography, Computer Information Systems, Business, Education, Public Administration, Finance, Accounting, Social or Physical Science, or Resource Management AND 4 years of progressively responsible experience in planning, programming analysis, data collection and analysis, research, or another appropriate field.

Alternative qualifications include: Any combination of additional related work experience and education equivalent to the minimum qualifications.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge:

o Mathematical and statistical analysis

o Computer systems, basic programming (i.e. R, Python), and/or code editing (i.e. Notepad ++)

o Theories, principles, methods, and techniques of transportation planning.

  • Skills:

o Data management and analysis

o Developing and documenting processes and procedures

o Managing GIS layers and metadata

o Researching, applying, and analyzing various modeling methods

o Implementing and monitoring QA/QC procedures

  • Abilities:

o Analytical and problem-solving skills

o Communication and interpersonal skills

o Independent and teamwork

o Meeting deadlines and working under pressure

This position belongs to the MFPE bargaining unit. The successful candidate will receive more information about the union and the option to join the union during the onboarding process. MDT MFPE bargaining unit members will have preference.

This position is covered under a Career Ladder Advancement Policy. Education and experience will determine salary.
