HDR's St. Louis Park, MN Office is seeking a Transportation Planner 1 to support a variety of transportation planning projects for clients in Minnesota and Wisconsin. This is a great opportunity to be part of the growth of HDR's MN/WI planning team and grow your career working on a variety of transformative projects. Example project types include complete streets conceptual design, active transportation plans, corridor studies, transit studies, transportation analysis to support environmental documentation, stakeholder facilitation, statewide and regional plans and studies, and local and federal grant applications. This position will be a split between planning tasks within our Planning section (70%), and public engagement tasks within our Strategic Communications section (30%).
Specific projects will be initially assigned that best align with the candidate's skillset, experience, and areas of interest. It is not expected that the candidate would possess all of the subject expertise areas of project types listed above. The candidate will have the opportunity to shape their career path in transportation planning through ongoing project work, successful booking of new projects, and in collaboration with HDR's internal work sharing network of planners nationally.
Primary Responsibilities
In the role of Transportation Planner 1, we'll count on you to:
- Collect, analyze and manage project-related data, such as existing conditions, socio-demographic, qualitative, or modal specific (e.g. pedestrian, bicycling, transit, vehicles).
- Use GIS, Excel, and other data analysis tools to complete technical analysis.
- Assist in writing reports, presentations, and other materials to document planning study findings.
- Logistics planning for in-person and virtual public meetings, community events, trainings, focus groups, workshops, advisory committees, and other meetings.
- Information gathering, note taking, and assisting project managers at project meetings.
- Writing email content and event invitations; coordinate with graphic artists on design of content.
- Attending and providing support during in-person and virtual engagement events.
- Perform other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning or closely related field.
- Experience with Microsoft Office programs.
- Self-starter with excellent writing and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong writing skills.
- Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving and research abilities.
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree preferred.
- Experience with GIS.
- Experience with data analysis tools.
- Demonstrated experience with public outreach, community relations, multicultural engagement, or event planning.
