Job description

Job Purpose: The Transportation Manager is responsible for the safe and efficient management of the transportation department. This position oversees transporting students over designated scheduled mountain routes and/or to/from special field studies, sometimes in hazardous winter conditions in the Lake Tahoe region. The goals are always to ensure vehicle operation is in a safe operating condition and students' safety during transport, loading, and unloading from buses. The department consists of two Bus Drivers with two primary daily routes serviced for students.
Schedule: M-F, 7 am - 4 pm.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Files all transportation paperwork and keeps the school in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Schedules bus routes.
  • Supervises and supports the training of Bus Drivers.
  • Administers first aid and medical assistance for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured children.
  • Assesses potential emergency situations for the purpose of taking appropriate action to protect the well-being of passengers.
  • Assists students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe entrance and exit from buses during emergency situations (bus evacuations) and normal transport.
  • Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior, for the purpose of maintaining the appearance, sanitation, and safety of the vehicle.
  • Communicates with a variety of people (e.g., students, student supervisors, parents, site staff, police, etc.) for the purpose of providing and/or acquiring information relating to job functions.
  • Conducts semiannual drills for the purpose of ensuring the ability to respond efficiently to emergency situations.
  • Coordinates with teachers, administrators, etc. (e.g., kindergarten roundup, scheduling routes, etc.) for the purpose of scheduling transportation for students and staff.
  • Directs students, parents, and teachers regarding safety for the purpose of enforcing rules, regulations, and safety standards.
  • Drives school vehicles (e.g., buses, vans, etc.) for the purpose of transporting students and student supervisors over scheduled routes and to and from school and/or field trips.
  • Fuels assigned vehicles (e.g., oil, water, fuel, etc.)
  • Oversight of vehicle maintenance.
  • Informs school personnel, parents, etc., of practices and incidents (e.g., rules, regulations, laws, procedures, etc.) to provide information for follow-up action and/or proper procedures.
  • Inspects assigned vehicles (e.g., pre and post-trip, checklist, brake system, oil levels, coolant levels, tire pressure, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the vehicle is in safe operating condition as required by state and federal laws.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior, for the purpose of ensuring the safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicles.
  • Monitors bus operations, route conditions, and rider activities to ensure passengers' safety.
  • Prepares documentation (e.g., incident reports, inspections, student count, passenger misconduct, mileage, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • Attend meetings and training to maintain skills and meet the requirements of a School Bus Driver certificate.
  • Assists in snow removal for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment.
  • Attends in-service training (e.g., bloodborne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.) for the purpose of receiving information on new and/or improved procedures.
  • Assist in the scheduling and assigning of buses and drivers to field studies and other needed functions.
  • Update the master transportation schedule as needed.
  • Maintain and update logs for the purpose of ensuring local, state, and federal compliance.

Minimum Qualifications Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:
  • California or Nevada Driver's License with passenger and air brake endorsement.
  • Medical Examination (DL-51)
  • First Aid Examination from CHP or a valid/approved Red Cross first aid card.
  • California Training Record T-O1 card.
  • H-6 (ten-year driving record from DMV) within 30 days, 3 years no moving violations, 3 years no suspensions or revocations.
  • This position requires a drug screen and random testing.

Preferred Qualifications Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:
  • California School Bus Special Certificate from CHP (DL-45)
  • Previous supervisory experience

Physical Requirements:
The School Bus Driver has a moderately strenuous job. The Driver must sit for long periods and requires intense concentration, particularly in poor driving conditions. The School Bus Driver must work in all different weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat. The School Bus Driver requires intense concentration. The Driver must maintain order and discipline on the bus while driving in a safe and appropriate manner. Stress can be caused by the need to address behavior issues and discipline problems.
