NATURE OF WORK: This position is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of passengers within the Nisqually community.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate transit vehicles on assigned routes maintaining established time schedules.
  • Provide information to the community regarding available transportation services and transportation policy.
  • Perform pre-operation safety inspections.
  • Request servicing and repairs as needed.
  • Maintain schedules and operate transit vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Track transit passengers at fixed stops; maintain all required passenger and vehicle records.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints regarding provided services.
  • Assist elders and others who need assistance including securing mobility aids and physically evacuating passengers in the event of an emergency.
  • Provide information to supervisor regarding route problems or traffic changes.
  • Provide detailed accident or incident reports.
  • Collect passenger fares.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the rules, regulations and standard operating procedures of the transportation system.
  • Knowledge of services and safe transit vehicle operations.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn to use dispatching devices such as hands-free cell phones or radios.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn route deviation coordination procedures around fixed route via cell phone or radio as part of a dispatch team.
  • Ability to safely operate transit coaches and vans.
  • Ability to resolve customer complaints courteously and tactfully.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to prepare accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to successfully complete mandatory training.
  • Ability to physically perform the duties of the position including moderate lifting, bending and crouching; assisting passengers on/off vehicle; sitting for long periods of tim

MINIMUM QUALIFICATONS:

  • Must have a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be insurable under the Tribe's insurance policy and maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment.
  • Must be willing and able to obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements within 6 months of hire
  • Must be able to work varying shifts, hours, and days including early mornings, late evenings, weekends and holidays.
