Form of workCandidate under the direct supervision of the Port Captain and an assigned Training Captain will gain experience through training of the intricacies of Vessel and Barge maneuvering, Port Operations, Customer Service, Engineering, Lines of Business understanding, and Safety. Candidates will receive training and experience on Conventional, VSP and ASD propulsion systems, various towing configurations, and Ship Assist methods. Candidate will receive training and experience in rigging, synthetic line care and utilization, ISM, SMS, VMP, AWO, RCP systems, and Leadership Development.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:- Supervise the crew, keep the vessel in operational readiness and perform jobs as assigned. Train the crew to perform their duties in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner.
- Direct maintenance on the vessel as needed.
- Understand and administer crew labor contracts as appropriate
- Evaluate all crewmembers in accordance with Company policy and take action as necessary.
- Responsible for ensuring that the Company's policies of Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity are carried out.
- Work closely with customers, pilots and appropriate government agencies to ensure the proper performance of the job.
- Decides the safest and most efficient vessel methods and routes, direction and path of sailing, to accomplish the vessel's mission.
- Ensure compliance of company safety policies, maintenance and training programs.
- Properly investigate and report marine incidents.
- Interpret and administer government regulations.
- Minimum of two years towing vessel experience as a Deck Hand or Deck Hand/Engineer.
- All candidates must have in their possession a valid US Coast Guard Master of Towing Vessels License (500 GRT) or License of greater tonnage with a Master of Towing endorsement, or US Coast Guard Masters License of 500 GRT with 30 days of towing service with a Towing Officer Assessment Record (TOAR). This will include a current Radar endorsement and FCC Radio Operators Permit.
- The US Coast Guard License must be Inland, Near Coastal, or Oceans. Great Lakes only will not be considered.
- Candidates must have a minimum of two years of towing vessel deck experience sailing as a Apprentice Mate Steersman, Mate of Towing Vessel, or Master of Towing Vessel.

- Working knowledge of vessel handling and navigational skills with operating assignments. Working knowledge of propulsion, auxiliary and deck machinery.
- Must possess strong written and oral communicative skills.
- Knowledge of San Francisco Bay area and tributaries, including tides, currents, weather, etc.
- Must be able to economically supervise all aspects of the operation of the vessel, its cargo and crew.
- Must be able to work independently and without direct supervision.
- Must be willing to work with all aspects of company/vessel compliance programs.
- Must have general computer skills.
- Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.)
- Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours.
- Able to work weekends, holidays, and at night. Willing to take call outs.
