Under the guidance of the Deputy Chief- Planning and Projects, the Trails Crew Member performs trail maintenance duties, restores trails, constructs trails, and assists in trail construction throughout MWCD and surrounding areas.
Assists in the creation of a detailed trails inventory record, using mapping technologies, such as global positioning systems (GPS) and GIS mapping software. Helps with trail condition inspections and assessments. Assists in the maintaining of trail systems including removing trash, snow removal, mowing, and landscaping. Works collaboratively with Trails Coordinator, Trails Technician, trail volunteers, staff, and other partners.
Practices standard MWCD safety procedures in performing job duties and assists other MWCD personnel as required.
Essential Functions include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Performs trail maintenance duties and other activities related to the construction, maintenance, and restoration of trails throughout MWCD and the surrounding areas. Assists in new trail construction projects, including construction repairs to trail structures. Clears trail corridors with manual tools, power tools, (i.e., chain saw and brush saws), volunteers, contractors, or mechanized equipment.
Assists in developing and implementing an inventory of MWCD's trail systems including trail structures and features (i.e., bridges, boardwalks, retaining walls, etc...). Identifies trail hazards including dangerous trees, erosion, and trail drainage issues. Provides detailed descriptions of individual trail segments.
Identifies trail signage needs, including distance and trail markers. Installs trail signage needs as determined by the trails inventory.
May utilize GPS systems and GIS mapping software to build detailed maps of trails as well as areas of concerns and unique features along these trail systems.
Assists in scouting areas for new trail systems as determined necessary by the Deputy Chief - Planning and Projects and the Trails Coordinator.
Participates with trail volunteers on projects as directed by Deputy Chief- Planning and Projects and the Trails Coordinator.
Assists parks and marinas in maintenance areas as directed by the Deputy Chief- Planning and Projects and the Trails Coordinator.
Skills and Abilities
Education:
Less than high school education; or up to one-month related experience or training; equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience:
Experience working with the public, trail maintenance, trail building, grounds keeping, landscaping a plus. Experience using wayfinding skills, including a map and compass a plus. Experience with GPS, specifically field data entry and collection a plus.

Certifications & Licenses:
Driver's license valid in the state of Ohio. Must be insurable by MWCD fleet insurance.
Abilities:
Ability to keep accurate records and good organizational skills. Ability to perform work with considerable independence and initiative. Ability to utilize trail building tools and equipment, including chain saws. Ability to work cooperatively with others. Ability to work well with the public and good public communication skills are required. Ability to handle stressful situations with professionalism. Ability to maintain confidential information.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Other Requirements, Expectations, or Unusual Conditions
It is anticipated that fieldwork will dominate this position. Attendance at meetings and functions may also require occasional evening and weekend work. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock.
