WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The Oak Openings Restoration Crew Member performs and participates in land stewardship and ecological restoration on TNC preserves and partner properties in the Oak Openings Regions of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. They control invasive plant species by applying herbicide and conducting tree/shrub removal. They may perform brush-cutting, chainsawing, and mowing. They may perform native seed collection, trash cleanup, and assist with preserve operations. They maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles. They may be asked to complete training for, and assist with, controlled burns. They may work in variable weather conditions at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. The position requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. The Crew Member may oversee other Crew Members, interns, and volunteers.

The position is full-time (35-40 hours per week) and short-term, lasting approximately 6 months. The base of operations is the Kitty Todd Nature Preserve in Swanton, Ohio, but work will be throughout the Oak Openings Region and Northwest Ohio.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • High school diploma or GED and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications, as required (e.g., First Aid, CPR, Commercial Pesticide Applicator License, Firefighter Type II).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 1 - 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.
  • Knowledge of plant and animal species of the Oak Openings Region.
  • Experience with invasive plant control and/or native seed collecting.
  • Experience operating various types of restoration equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g., tractor, chainsaw, ATV/UTV, or similar equipment).
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
  • PC and/or mobile device familiarity.

SALARY INFORMATION


The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $18.50 an hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
