Form of workNOTE: Qualified applicants will be required to take an online exam. Applicants are required to test alone in a quiet, distraction-free area using a reliable computer with a high-speed internet connection, a microphone, a webcam (internal or external), and a Windows or Apple Operating System. Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class differs from that of Traffic Marker-Sign Painter I in that the Traffic Signs and Markings Helper assists in the painting, fabricating and installing of TRAFFIC SIGNS AND pavement markings and performs routine and semi-skilled tasks independently; whereas the Traffic Marker-Sign Painter I performs a variety of skilled work in the painting, fabricating and installation of TRAFFIC SIGNS AND pavement markings and may supervise the work of Traffic Signs and Markings Helpers.

Assists in making sign patterns and layouts on heavy paper; cuts out sign patterns from layouts; prepares metal sign plates for painting by washing in acid solution; applies paint with spray gun on metal sign plates or operates a vacuum heat applicator to apply reflective material to sign plates; may apply paint, stains and/or lacquer on woodwork with brush; hand letters SIGNS AND other designs as directed; prepares paint for pavement markings; assists in application of Sta-Mak tapes or painting of centerlines, edgelines, stop bars, crosswalks, parking stalls, pavement markings, etc.; rests, replaces, removes and installs traffic and street SIGNS AND posts; may operate pion-jar post tamper; may perform other trades and road maintenance work when not doing SIGNS AND MARKINGS work.

Training and Experience: (1) A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of work experience in laying out letters and numerals, preparing and cutting stencils, mixing and applying paints, and preparing metal signs, wood, pavement and other surfaces for painting.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3).
Knowledge of: practices, tools and equipment used in applying paints and other painting material; characteristics of paints and other materials in sign painting and pavement marking work; methods of cleaning brushes and other painting equipment; methods of preparing surfaces for the application of paint and other coverings, common occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the trade .
Ability to: lay out signs, prepare and cut stencils; operate spray painting equipment and vacuum heat applicator; do manual work; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; spell; distinguish basic colors.
