Job description

This recruitment will remain open until filled, with the first application review taking place on January 22, 2024.

Installs and maintains parking and traffic control signs. Lays out and paints pavement markings, curb zones, parking lot spaces and street lines using a Thermoplastic Machine, spray equipment and stencils and related equipment.
Works under the general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Superintendent and the Lead Traffic Painter, arranging and performing routine assignments alone. Detailed instructions are frequently provided and work is regularly reviewed. Coordinates and monitors the work activities of Trade Interns and as-needed staff, as assigned.
Measures and lays out areas to be painted which include crosswalks and curb zones. Performs related pavement lettering.
Paints crosswalks, parking lines, safety zones, loading zones and bus zones using a Thermoplastic Machine, stencils and spray equipment.
Operates a lift bucket truck to install large signs. Measures and lays out area to erect traffic signs. Mixes concrete, places posts and pours foundations. Uses power driven and manual post hole diggers to remove dirt, as needed.
Mixes paint. Cleans and maintains spray paint equipment and brushes.
Paints traffic sign posts, guardrails and barricades using spray equipment or rollers.
Installs and maintains parking meter poles.
Prepares and maintains logs and records. Utilizes a utility database system to enter and retrieve data, prepare work orders and to record and track completed service delivery.
Participates in parking and traffic volume count surveys.
Prepares tools and materials cost estimates.
Maintains work order records within a computerized work order system.
Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.
Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Knowledge of:
Paints, painting and paint mixing techniques, solvents and related street painting materials.
Basic mathematics and recordkeeping.
The use of hand and power tools used for painting.
Concrete mixing formulas and proportions.
Safe work procedures for performing job duties in traffic.
Effective customer service techniques.
Ability to:
Prepare and maintain logs, written records and reports.
Read and interpret blueprints and street marking plans.
Operate a hydraulic bucket truck over traffic and from various heights.
Work at high elevations.
Lift, carry and move heavy objects.
Take accurate measurements.
Set concrete forms.
Perform physical labor for sustained periods.
Perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
Operate hand tools, power tools and hydraulic painting equipment, as needed.
Follow written and oral instructions.
Operate a personal computer and applicable software applications.
Provide effective customer service. Respond to inquiries from the public in a tactful manner.
Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
Skill in:
Operating hand and power tools and heavy power equipment.
Reading, writing and communicating at an appropriate level.
Using a personal computer and applicable software applications.
Working effectively with persons from diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds.
Education, Training and Experience:

High school graduation or equivalent. Two years of recent, paid work experience performing traffic sign installation and maintenance including street painting. Public sector experience is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of a valid class C driver license.
Possession of a valid level I Signs and Markings certificate from the Traffic Control Supervisors Association (T.C.S.A.) or the International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.) must be obtained within one year from date of hire. Possession of a valid level II Signs and Markings certificate from the Traffic Control Supervisors Association (T.C.S.A.) or the International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.) is desirable.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work is regularly performed outdoors and requires regular exposure to seasonal weather conditions. Moving objects, noise, dirt, chemicals, and oils may be present as may be conditions associated with the regular handling of paint products. Exposure to vibrations and dust are frequently encountered. Work is regularly performed on a ladder or from a lift bucket extended to various heights. Physical demands include bending, reaching and standing including lifting and carrying up to 90 pounds. This is a temporary hourly position without benefits. The City Of Santa Monica provides a deferred compensation (457) retirement plan for its as-needed (temporary) employees who are not eligible for coverage under the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). The City and as-needed employee are each required to contribute 3.75% of wages to the deferred compensation plan. As-needed employee contributions will be deducted from paychecks on a pre-tax basis.
