Full-Time, Year-Round

Non-Exempt, Overtime Eligible

Pay Rate: $27/hour to start, increased to $28/hour post 90 days


The Track Foreman is an at-will position governed by the Massachusetts Coastal Railroad (MCRR) Employee Handbook, NORAC, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), and any other applicable rules and regulations in effect. All work at Mass Coastal is performed in accordance with FRA, industry, and company standards and guidelines, procedures, and specifications. Mass Coastal offers completed and detailed training for this position, as well as the opportunity for professional growth and advancement. Operating in a safe manner will take place over any other job function. This position reports to the Maintenance-of-Way (MOW) Roadmaster.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:


Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Oversee and perform MOW repairs, new construction, and general maintenance of railroad track.
  • Oversee and perform basic track maintenance, track repair, tie gangs, and track construction.
  • Oversee and perform safe operation of company vehicles, track repair tools (mechanical and manual), maintenance equipment including, but not limited to, hydraulic power tools, spike puller, drills, rail saw, track wrench machine, etc., for self and work crew.
  • Observe, be alert, and be vigilant in all work conditions and situations to ensure and keep safety as the number one priority.
  • Provide on-track safety protection for MCRR employees as well as outside contractors.
  • Supervise and schedule work for crews of three or more laborers and one or more heavy equipment operators.
  • Inspect and take disturbed track OOS with dispatcher.
  • Inspect and return track to service with the dispatcher.
  • Be on call for track emergencies to include derailments, natural disasters (snow, rain, wind, etc.), downed trees and other emergencies.
  • Collaborate with other departments, crews, contractors, and others as necessary.
  • Responsible for reporting injuries, incidents, and accidents per pre-established guidelines.
  • Communicate and perform tasks (i.e., complete timesheets, prepare and/or review documents, send emails and texts, etc.) using applications (i.e., MS Word and Excel, Outlook, Paychex, Fulcrum, etc.) via electronic communication tools such as cell phone, computer, two-way radios, etc.
  • Shall be or become proficient and qualified in the physical characteristics of all Mass Coastal track territory (i.e. be able to draw maps of location(s), know locations of all crossing stops, etc.).
  • Acquire and maintain a general overall knowledge of Mass Coastal Railroad operations.
  • Shall be or become qualified in MCRR Timetable and RWIC; 49 CFR 213.7; MCRR CWR; NORAC; and any other required industry qualifications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements/Preferences

High School Diploma or equivalent

Previous railroad, construction, and/or supervisory experience preferred

Available at an on-call basis for railroad emergency call response

Must also be committed to promoting a safe workplace

Ability to walk on level or uneven ground, bend, twist, stoop, push, pull, and lift

Must have a valid Driver’s License

Must be highly competent in the use of a cell phone, computer (laptop and desktop), internet, and computer applications to read and enter information including, but not limited to, emails, spreadsheets, forms, track inspection documents, etc. in all electronic communications, add in any workplace location (i.e. in the field, office, vehicle, on the train, etc.).

Additional Information

Must be able to read and comprehend written safety rules, procedure and safety manuals, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memorandums and other work-related information.

Ability to think and act quickly in responding to emergency and non-emergency situations.

Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills.

Must be able to handle medium to heavy work; lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 80 pounds on a rare basis.

Knowledge of safety rules and regulations to prevent on duty accidents and injuries.

Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.

Must be able to work in an extremely loud work environment.

Applicant must be currently authorized to work permanently in the United States.

Applicant must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
