Full Time 1st Shift Monday-Friday 7:30 am-3:30 pm

Wage:  $31.45 an hour exempt position  Annual Salary $65,416.00

Eligible Employer for Public Student Loan Forgiveness as a non-profit.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of Program Manager, oversee the academic programs of the Sasiwaans Immersion School; advocate, nurture and sustain a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth. Empowered to ensure academic management of the program and resources for a safe, efficient and effective learning environment. All ALRP staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws.


The original spoken language of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian community is in a critical state of loss. If action is not taken immediately the language that was spoken for hundreds of years will be lost forever.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and oversight of an appropriate instructional program, including evaluation of the curriculum, planning for improvements, student assessment and reporting.
  • Monitor and assess instructor progress to evaluate effectiveness of student learning and provide recommendations concerning instruction practices.   
  • Review current software plan, organize, and direct implementation of consistent school wide curriculum.
  • Provide oversight and organize training for instructors to administer student assessment activities and reporting of student progress utilizing the web-based curriculum and assume program administrative access.
  • Analyze data and write reports as necessary in areas developed within the school, staff development plan and/or other reports as requested.
  • Act as a Substitute Primary Instructor when necessary.
  • Provide supervision of Sasiwaans daily operations and staff to include evaluations, training, leave requests, etc.
  • Implement staff meetings and provide recommendations and plan Professional Development in-service days and facilitate when necessary.
  • Oversee the safety of students and staff in an emergency.
  • Assist in the planning, supervision, and coordination of all emergency preparedness activities as required by law such as fire drills and lock downs.
  • Provide oversight and ensure student records, student data reporting, attendance records and required documents are maintained as required by applicable law and policy.
  • Participate in appropriate workshops, seminars, meetings and courses.
  • Collaborate with other tribal programs to insure a culturally holistic approach within the classroom.
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:

  • Empowered to interact and be in contact with Sasiwaans, SCA, tribal staff, parents, students tribal and outside community, and professional education resources to accomplish the goals of the ALRP.
  • Contact is with students, department employees and supervisor.
  • Contact with other school staff members, Language Revitalization Program Manager, officials, parents, students and general public to obtain, clarify or give facts concerning students, language acquisition, academics or school activities.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, and cultural needs of Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
  • Knowledge of department organization, functions, objectives, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of youth learning principles, and of a wide range of training methods, techniques, and formats.
  • Knowledge of Early Childhood development, diet and nutrition guidelines.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and preparation procedures.
  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including Windows Office programs.
  • Skill in preparing, reviewing and analyzing operational and financial reports.
  • Skill in supervising, training and evaluating assigned staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Ability to present information and workshops.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.


Physical Demands:

  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
  • Required to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally sit, bend, climb and balance.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.


Work Environment:

  • Normal office environment and classroom.
  • Expose to unpleasant odors, hazardous material and infectious disease.
  • Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
  • Travel may be required.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Education or related field.
  • Two years experience and training with Early Childhood Programs. One year in a supervisory capacity.
  • Excellent communication and group leadership skills.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Fluent Anishinaabe Speaker
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs


License, Certification, or Special Requirements:

  • State of Michigan Early Childhood Certification or ZS Endorsement.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Drivers License and must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Drivers License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
  • Tribal preference and Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
