Theatre Technician

Education and Experience:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of experience working in community arts, preferably in performing arts, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above. The highly qualified candidate will possess at least one year of experience in technical theatre work or other related performing arts programs and must work well with the public.

Special Requirements:

Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to employment, a valid Class C California Driver's License and a good driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of practices, materials, resources, and tools associated with theatre production.

Knowledge of stage lighting, rigging and sound requirements for a variety of artistic productions.

Some knowledge of the basic principles and philosophy of community and professional theatre.

Some knowledge of occupational hazards and related safety precautions to be observed in working around stage equipment and in using power and hand tools.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.

Skill in communicating effectively in English both orally and in writing

Ability to operate power tools, use hand tools, office equipment, and/or materials appropriate to the specific job assignment.

Ability to respond to numerous public inquiries and disseminate accurate information while maintaining a high level of customer service.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to perform custodial duties in line with regular and specialized facility maintenance.

Ability to effectively utilize computer applications and technology related to the work.

Working Conditions/Required Physical Abilities:

There is significant physical work in lifting and carrying equipment and supplies. The employee must be able to bend, climb, and reach. There may be some hazards associated with working in high places or with chemicals, certain art supplies, tools, and equipment.

The City of Walnut Creek is seeking to hire hourly Theatre Technicians to join the Arts and Recreation Department’s Lesher Center for the Arts. This position involves considerable public contact, while working in a fast-paced environment. Work schedules will vary depending upon program needs and will include evening, weekend and extended hours. Under immediate supervision by the Production Services Supervisor, this position performs a variety of duties related to theatre technical support within the three theatres of the Lesher Center for the Arts (LCA).

Representative Duties

Assists in organizing and coordinating community arts production services; serves as equipment operator during technical rehearsals and performances; ensures that lighting, sound and rigging equipment are in proper working order and operating in a safe manner; installs and assists in the maintenance of stage lighting and related technical systems; operates sound, lighting, communication and stage equipment, and performs routine repair work as needed; builds and installs sets and scenery including stage props and furniture; and performs related work as needed.
