Position Coordinate Theater Department Chair
Organizational Background

From the top of Mount St. Alban, St. Albans School and National Cathedral School look up to the
Washington National Cathedral and out to the United States Capitol. St. Albans School was
established in 1909 and National Cathedral School in 1900. Our mission is to
prepare students in grades 4 through 12 to develop and use their spiritual, intellectual, artistic, and
physical gifts not for themselves alone, but in service of the greater community. As Episcopal

the strong coordinate program between St. Albans School and National Cathedral School, students
have the opportunity to participate in a number of co-educational opportunities, including theater
productions and classes, which are fully coordinate for students at both schools.
Job Description

St. Albans School (STA) for boys and National Cathedral School (NCS) for girls seek a dynamic
leader for a Theater Department of four full-time faculty members. The department annually
produces five theatrical productions and supports a dance gala that is produced through the athletic
department at NCS. The department is fully coordinated with coeducational productions and
academic classes taught at both schools in the Upper School (9th through 12th grades) and
Middle/Lower School (MS/LS) divisions (7th and 8th grades at both schools). The Department
Chair is actively involved in the administration of both schools. The Chair directs two productions
each year, one in the Upper School and one in the MS/LS. Traditionally, the Chair directs the
musical theater productions. Teaching responsibilities include electives in the Upper School; past
electives have included Acting and Directing, Public Speaking, and Design for Theater. In the
Middle/Lower School, the Chair is part of a team-taught enrichment course in both the 7th and 8th
grade. The Middle/Lower school courses are taught in a single-sex environment and are required for
all students. The Department Chair is also responsible for all administrative departmental activities
including budgeting, ticketing, box office reconciliation, procurement oversight, promotional
materials, and the administration of the student International Thespian Society Troupe.

Specifically, areas of responsibilities will include the following:

  • Shepherd play selection approval process with Division Heads and DEI faculty at both
schools/divisions
  • Attend regular Department Chair meetings at both schools, and other meetings as needed
  • Administer the calendar for the Theater Department (part of an annual three school
process).
  • Participate in the planning of the annual Performing Arts Celebration at the end of the year
with the Music and Dance departments.
  • Oversee budget with STA Business Office



Production

  • Oversee the six production season in the Upper School and Lower/Middle School
o November – Upper School Play
o December – Middle School Musical
o February – Upper School Musical
o April – Middle School Play
o April - Student Directed One-Act Play Festival
o April - NCS Athletic Department Dance Gala
  • Direct two of the six productions, one in each division. Traditionally these are the December
and February productions
  • Oversee logistics for all productions including ticketing, publicity, coordination of student
groups attending productions, program artwork, box office reconciliation
  • Coordinate with STA foodservice for cast dinners for both US productions.
  • Support hiring and coordinate contract artists for each production (Choreographers,

Lighting Designers, Archival Production photography)
Academic Classes

  • Teach Middle School enrichment classes with department colleagues. All students in 7th and
th grade/ Form I and Form II are enrolled in a theater enrichment course. These are
semester courses at STA and trimester courses at NCS
  • Offer and teach semester-long elective courses

Thespian Society
  • Host a barbeque at the beginning and end of each academic year
  • Maintain the Thespian Society database during and after each production
  • Enroll and induct new Thespians three times a year

Supervision Exercised

For the purposes of management, performance assessment, and span of control, the Theater
Department Chair directly supervises:

  • Theater Director, Technical Director, and Costume Designers
  • Contractors or employees as needed for pit band and lighting

Professional Experience & Qualifications

Minimum Experience: Minimum of 3 years of drama or performance coaching/teaching
required; Preference will be given to candidates who also have
previous supervisory experience within a school.

Education: Advanced degree preferred

Certifications: N/A

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous work within an Independent School

Working Conditions

As a community, we make the effort to support events in the life of the school and occasions that
celebrate our students and colleagues. Performances, concerts, exhibitions, faculty and staff social
gatherings, alumni gatherings, athletic contests, and other shared experiences weave the adults and
students of this community together.


Schedule – Typical schedule is Monday through Friday with a varied schedule that may include
teaching a morning elective class, with primary responsibility during rehearsal times that may extend
as late as 10 PM. As this is a faculty role, there is an expectation the Theater Department Chair will
participate in key significant events referenced above in the specific areas of responsibility

Work Environment: Primarily a standard indoor school environment and including attendance at
outdoor events such as athletic games, as well as chapel participation; ability to navigate a sprawling
multi-building campus.
