Dates of Internship: June 1-August 6, 2024

JOB OBJECTIVE: The Intern will assist the Finance and Accounting Division (FAD) with the Legislative Appropriations Request (LAR) documentation and other budget functions within FAD for the Texas Historical Commission (THC). Duties may include coordinating calendars, setting up meetings, conducting and analyzing data, and calculating and presenting the results of the analysis to the Lead Budget Analyst and/or Division Director, Finance and Accounting.

Please note: Interns are responsible for their own housing and transportation. The THC does not offer housing support for this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Assist the Lead Budget Analyst and/or Director, FAD, with all aspects of the Legislative Appropriations Request (LAR) process.
  2. Assist with budget functions to include:
    • Download CAPPS budget requisition reports.
    • Coordinating performance measures from divisions.
    • Assist with coordinating internal operating budget documents.
    • Assist with compiling quarterly meeting packets.
  3. Assist the Office Manager, as needed, on budget documents.
  4. Adhere to an established work schedule with regular attendance.
  5. Follow all THC safety guidelines/procedures and ethics requirements.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Currently enrolled as a junior or senior in an accredited college/university with a focus in accounting, finance, economics, or mathematics (or a recent graduate with one year of receiving your degree);
  • School or work experience utilizing budget functions;
  • Microsoft Excel skills, including use of formulas and pivot tables;
  • Valid Texas driver's license, acceptable driving record, and ability to drive a state vehicle; and
  • Required to travel up to 5% of the work period.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations relating to financial compliance and Accounting theory (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles);
  • Effective verbal and written communication, human relations, and organizational skills;
  • Microsoft Excel skills, including use of formulas and pivot tables;
  • Skill in providing customer service excellence to both internal and external customers;
  • Skill in operating a personal computer with word processing, database, and spreadsheet software;
  • Effective critical thinking skills;
  • Ability to learn new accounting and ancillary systems quickly;
  • Ability to analyze internal client needs and leverage accounting systems effectively to meet those needs;
  • Ability to analyze problems, evaluate alternatives, and recommend effective solutions;
  • Ability to process information logically and to assess validity;
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines while maintaining extreme attention to detail;
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to adapt successfully and quickly to change and deliver quality results in a timely manner;  
  • Ability to plan, organize, and work independently, as well as within a team environment;
  • Ability to work in a setting requiring self-motivation/cooperative decision-making and to work effectively with diverse groups of people;
  • Ability to establish goals and objectives and to devise solutions to problems;
  • Ability to organize information and provide clear audit trails for documentation;
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion; and
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality. 
REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION, OR LICENSURE:

Must have or obtain a valid Driver's License and Defensive Driving Course to be able to operate state vehicles.

ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:  Normal office work environment and may have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal business activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve walking, standing, pulling and pushing, kneeling, stooping, and bending, performing tasks requiring fine motor skills and coordination, and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able to work extended periods at a computer and may require working extended hours and some evenings and weekends, as needed.  May involve travel, occasionally overnight. The position requires regular, in-office presence but the agency telework policy may permit up to three days per week of remote work, subject to job and performance requirements.
