What is it that we do at Colonial Pipeline Company?
Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.
About the Terminal Operator (Associate or I) Position
Based on the qualifications of the candidate pool, this position may be filled at as Associate or Level I.
As the Terminal Operator, you are responsible for general terminal operations, inspections, and maintenance; as well as for receiving product via pipeline. The Terminal Operator is responsible for testing pipeline deliveries for product quality and volume verification, pipeline receipts, terminal inspections. This position participation in terminal inspections and terminal maintenance to include light maintenance on loading rack and tank farm equipment. Associate Terminal Operator is a developmental position and trains to operate the terminal, troubleshoot terminal operations equipment and technology, and provide excellent customer support. The Terminal Operator I is fully trained and qualified to independently operate the terminal facility, troubleshoot terminal operations equipment and technology, and provide excellent customer support.
What You Get to Do:

  • Associate Terminal Operator trains to obtain required knowledge by working with the designated trainer provided.
  • Associate Level must achieve proficiency by learning, then performing independently terminal operations.
  • Terminal Operator I is fully trained and is responsible to independently perform terminal operations.
  • Associate Terminal Operator and Terminal Operator I will learn/master testing pipeline deliveries for product quality and volume verification, terminal inspections, maintenance to include light maintenance on loading rack and tank farm equipment, receiving pipeline receipts and associated valve alignment, understanding reporting notification procedures both internally and externally, in the event of product contamination, NOV or spill, and documentation of plans and permits.
  • Both are expected to contribute to successful department operations through teamwork and collaboration.
  • Learn or assist with local daily functions such as project work, operational improvements, monitoring contractor activities, alarm awareness and technician maintenance. Participates in meetings and required training.

What You Bring to the Table:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) from an accredited education institution.
  • Ideally for Level I, 1+ years of external experience at a truck rack terminal.
  • Or ideally, 1+ years of Colonial Experience in the Associate Terminal Operator position and has completed all necessary training & exhibits proficiency at a Colonial Terminal facility.
  • Ability to work extended hours, holidays, and weekends as required.
  • Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record to drive company and personal vehicles to perform required tasks up to 10% travel.
  • Mechanical aptitude, including knowledge of machines and tools, and their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Ability to remain alert while on-duty.
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Exercise good decision-making judgement, manage fatigue, foster a productive and team-oriented environment.

Physical Requirements & Work Conditions:
Ability to work indoors and outdoors at all hours in all weather conditions near refined petroleum products and heavy equipment. Ability to detect the presence of petroleum products by smell. Ability to safely remove and/or store hazardous waste materials. Ability to climb onto and under railcar (terminal applicable). Ability to climb tanks steps and climb vertical ladders to valve platforms to perform hand gauging for product volume verification. Digital dexterity for operation of calculator, PC keyboard and mouse. Physical strength to open and close manually operated valves and pressure vessel (trap, strainers, and filter) closures. Physical mobility to sit, stand, reach, pull, push, and bend. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted. Ability to work in non-permit required confined spaces. Ability to verbally communicate by two-way radio, especially during emergency response. Normal visual acuity to perform duties of position. If vision is corrected, must be corrected to 20/40 or better. Color recognition for control panel indicator lights and to analyze product colors. Considered "Heavy Work" based on ADA physical standards.
