DEPARTMENT/COLLEGE SUMMARY:

California State University, Sacramento (Sacramento State), the capital campus, invites applications from individuals interested in joining our dynamic, diverse, and growing criminal justice faculty. Sacramento State, with a student population of approximately 30,000 is one of the larger 23 campuses of the California State University system.  Sacramento State is also one of the most diverse of the CSU campuses and has been designated both as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HIS) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI). There are approximately 1,800 permanent full-time faculty and lecturers who provide programs of instruction leading towards bachelor's degrees in 60 disciplines and Master's degrees in 40 disciplines, one joint doctoral program, and three independent doctoral programs.

The Division of Criminal Justice undergraduate program is one of the highest ranked academic programs at Sacramento State, and it is the second largest major in the university, plus a modest-sized graduate program.  The Division provides education to approximately 1,800 majors and pre-majors (Expressed Interest), maintaining one of the most diverse student and faculty programs within the University. Approximately 40 percent of our students are first-generation college students and two-thirds of Criminal Justice students are under-represented minorities.

The Division focuses on the development of professionals as well as educated citizenry to serve in leadership and administrative roles, in both the design and management of an effective, efficient, and complex criminal justice/criminal legal system and procedures. The Division's curriculum emphasizes ethical decision making and problem solving as applied to a broad-based criminal justice curriculum, with a vision of being "...a dynamic center for educating students to be future leaders with professional competencies and ethics, abilities and values that allow them to be productive and engaged members of a global society," under the Hornet Honor Code: https://www.csus.edu/diversity-inclusion/_internal/_documents/honor-code1.pdf.

Graduates are expected to demonstrate a firm understanding of the nature of crime and deviance, its impact on society, and society's response to criminal and deviant behavior under the principles of due process and rule of law. Criminal Justice students must acquire command of a substantive body of knowledge about the operations and dynamics in the correctional system, the law and courts, police/public safety, as well as offenders, law enforcement, investigations, administration, and a wide-range of critical and contemporary criminal justice issues, including global issues in criminology. The Division is very engaged in the current campus priority for new action on anti-racism initiatives through its series of workshops, seminars and trainings on racial justice, with many opportunities, activities and services in the broader community. The Division houses the Law Enforcement Candidate Scholars (LECS), an undergraduate student certificate/mentoring program for those from underserved populations interested in going into law enforcement. The Division prepares leaders for local, state, federal, and global criminal justice services, and is guided by the following values:

POSITION DETAILS:

This is a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor to teach within the Division of Criminal Justice in the College of Health and Human Services beginning in August 2024. 

The classification annual salary range for this position is $64,860-$158,064; the anticipated annual starting salary is $ 74,642. Salary and appointment to the Assistant or Associate professor level will be dependent upon CSU system-wide ranges, qualifications, and professional experience.

JOB DUTIES:

(1) teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in criminal justice in a way that fosters inclusive and equitable student success in topics that include, but are not limited to, procedural and substantive criminal law, judicial process, and other areas within the Division as needed;

(2) developing other undergraduate/graduate courses in area of specialization as needed;

(3) engaging in scholarly and creative activities;

(4) serving on division, college and university committees;

(5) advising students;

(6) supervising undergraduate research and/or Master's student research/theses;

(7) participating actively in a variety of community activities, including those directly connected to the legal profession.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: 

Earned juris doctorate (J.D.) degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association or the State Bar of California and have membership in good standing in a state bar association. Ph.Ds. without a J.D. will not be considered.

Special Knowledge and Abilities:

• Strong background and knowledge in criminal law and criminal procedure.
• Capacity to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, law of evidence, structure and function of courts, and other related subject matter is required.
• Candidates must exhibit a capacity to utilize instructional technology in teaching.
• Demonstrated ability to foster a classroom environment that is inclusive and equitable.

Experience:

• Successful teaching experience at a university level
• Three years of practice in criminal law, constitutional law, or related practice area.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience with and/or potential to provide academic and career advising to diverse students, such as pre-law advising
• Record of publication and/or scholarly activity
• Proficient in languages other than English
• Ability to contribute to the campus imperatives
• Experience teaching online courses
• Ability to develop undergraduate research projects/lead undergraduate teams
• Ability to teach large classes (70 students or more)
