Description of Job
VISITOR SERVICES ASSISTANT:
This is a customer service-based position that provides information to customers and handles all aspects of pass sales while providing support to the staff. Daily interaction with park visitors requires effective communication and public relations skills. The Visitor Services Assistant welcomes visitors and provides park-specific information. Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Staff the park entrance station and/or the visitor center.
  • Work directly with park visitors to greet and orientate them with the park.
  • Answer questions about local wildlife, historical, cultural, and park history.
  • Operate a cash register, collect revenue, complete shift reports and balance shift box at the end of each shift.
  • Sell park passes, permits, registrations, licenses, books, maps, clothing and novelties.
  • Convey information concerning emergency situations to staff and 911 via radio and telephone.
  • Light cleaning duties of Entrance Station and Visitor Center.
  • Occasionally hike park trails.
  • Help with special events and educational programs as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND VISITOR ENGAGEMENT ASSISTANT:
(40 hours per week w/ up to a 9-month term) Coordinate and deliver a variety of environmental education and interpretation programs both at the State Park and within the local community. This position will also assist with visitor engagement related to our timed-entry vehicle reservation system, including conducting visitor intercept surveys. Primary duties include coordinating and presenting environmental education and interpretation programming, field data collection (i.e. visitor intercept surveys), data entry and analysis; assisting with general park operations such as staffing the visitor center and administrative tasks or other general office duties as assigned.
  • Schedule, plan and present Junior Ranger programs
  • Schedule, plan and present school and group programs
  • Work with Hispanic Access Foundation Intern
  • Schedule, plan and present campfire programs and guided hikes
  • Schedule, plan and present outreach programs
  • Provide roving interpretation in campgrounds and day use areas
  • Work with individual and group volunteers
  • Market and promote attendance at programs
  • May develop brochures and other written materials
  • May work the visitor center front desk
  • May assist with coordination and facilitate special events as needed
  • May assist with promotion of the park through social media as needed
  • Collect, catalog, organize and protect park collections of slides, photographs, specimens, etc.
  • Attend assigned training sessions
Educate park visitors about our timed-entry system and gather and analyze feedback about visitor experience. Additionally, analyze quantitative timed-entry system data from traffic counters, the Eldo shuttle and Integrated Parks and Wildlife System (IPAWS).
  • Educate the public about the timed-entry system via public relations contacts at the park or at community events and via social media.
  • Conduct brief visitor intercept surveys.
  • Design informal survey displays and place them in strategic locations in the Park.
  • Collect and analyze survey and visitor feedback data and compile a report.
  • Collect and analyze traffic counter and IPAWS data and compile a report.

MAINTENANCE, FORESTRY AND TRAILS ASSISTANT:
This is a rare opportunity to learn a lot, work hard, and make a lasting contribution to an amazing natural area. Over the course of the 2024 season, we'll build climbing access trails, do extensive forest fuel mitigation, and maintain and improve the park's facilities and natural resources. Duties include but are not limited to
  • General park maintenance and cleaning of public facilities including restrooms, common areas, vault toilets, picnic areas, painting, roads, parking areas and trails, etc.
  • Responsible for safely and courteously operating and maintaining state-owned vehicles,
  • UTV, ATV and small power equipment.
  • Communicate professionally and courteously with visitors, employees, and volunteers.
  • Assist with forest fuels mitigation projects, including species/disease identification, crew supervision, felling, bucking, chipping, and saw maintenance.
  • Perform trail maintenance and construction of natural surface single track trails with a strong focus on stone stairways and walls.
  • Supervise volunteers and youth corps.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

HOUSING: The park may be able to provide low-cost housing for the duration of employment.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Basic Park Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have a current & valid drivers' license and reliable transportation.
  • The work site will provide some uniform items, however the employee may be required to purchase limited uniform items at their own expense.
  • Applicants will be subject to successful completion of a comprehensive background check.
  • Must be available to work mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Basic computer skills required
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and work well within a team.
Maintenance, Forestry and Trails Assistant Specific Requirements:
  • Must be willing and able to work 40 hours per week.
  • Willing to work outside, sometimes in inclement weather.
  • Must be able to lift 75-100 pounds repeatedly during the course of a single workday.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills are preferred.
  • Plant/tree identification skills are helpful.
  • Experience safely operating equipment and tools is helpful.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently towards clearly defined projects and outcome.
Visitor Services Assistant Specific Requirements:
  • Must be willing and able to work a minimum of 24 hours per week but can potentially be up to 40 hours per week in the busy season.
  • Possess strong communication skills to deliver excellent customer service.
  • Previous experience handling money and working with the public is preferred.
  • Must be able to lift 10-25 pounds repeatedly during the course of a workday.
