Job Description
Under the supervision of the Code Compliance Specialist, provide a friendly presence for the tourists in the assigned areas of downtown. Support responsible citizenship regarding litter, animal waste, graffiti, and related issues. Act as an ambassador of the community to the seasonal visitors. Weekend and shift work will be required.
Examples of Duties
• Perform receptionist duties, to include answering the telephone; assist the public in registering, adopting, and surrendering animals; and assist the public by explaining Borough policies and procedures. These duties may include working with irate citizens.
• Collect and reconcile fees in accordance with Assembly direction.
• Complete animal husbandry duties including but not limited to: cleaning animal housing areas, feeding assigned animal diets, providing fresh water, washing and disinfecting animal food and water bowls, washing and disinfecting animal laundry, walking and exercising animals in the shelter; administer medications as prescribed and directed by the veterinarian. Observe teh animal population for signs of illness or injury and report the information to the Director. Also, write the information in the animals chart.
• Operate FCC licensed two-way radio.
• Assist field officers with communications to other agencies and the public.
• Computer data entry.
• Other duties as assigned by the Director.
• Assist staff with multiple animal impounds and any potential off site hoarding cases being investigated by the department.
• Give testimony in court to any cases the department processed that involved the Kennel Attendant's observations, witness, or information of evidentiary value.
• Assist the veterinarian and staff as requested with animal treatments, vacccinations, parasite control application.
• Complete web based training as directed by Borough supervisors.
• Be familiar with department policies, Standard Operational Procedures, and Safety Data Sheet information.
• Follow safety guidelines for all duties as directed.
• Assist staff with field duties as needed.
• Answer questions from the public and conduct public interactions in a polite and professional manner, offering information and directions when requested.
• Empty all animal waste bins, replace liners, and remove waste to the appropriate location.
• Work will be performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Wear appropriate clothing for weather conditions and Borough -provided clothing while on duty.
• Perform duties of the position with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to stand/walk for long periods of time.
ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES:
Provide instruction to other employees of this or a similar job classification in all aspects of procedure and technique relating to the duties required by this job description unless such instruction requires a specialized certification, which the employee doing the training does not have.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of animal control regulations; animal handling techniques.
  • The ability to work around sick and injured animals and under stressful situations.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret animal protection ordinances and the ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and WordPerfect.
  • Willingness to perform various job-related duties as situation requires.
  • A strong sense of teamwork, and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to interact positively with a diverse range of people including visitors, residents and fellow employees.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
Must be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; and taste and smell. Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, climbing on stools and ladders, and routinely lifting and carrying items and boxes weighing up to thirty (30) pounds. Crawling, bending, and stooping in confined areas. Shoveling or sweeping dirt from walkways. Sweeping and picking up litter.
Work on a personal computer. Controlling animals, including large animals over 75 pounds in weight. Dispatch and report over FCC licensed radio system.
Requirements
LICENSES: Valid State of Alaska Driver's License with a driving record acceptable to the Borough's insurance carrier.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year experience as Animal Protection trainee and one year (1) general office experience preferred but not required.
  • Prior customer service experience is desired.

Any combination of related education and/or related experience will be considered if the candidate possesses the demonstrated ability.
