Summary
Receives incoming calls for police and fire, dispatches officers and firefighters as appropriate, and monitors police radio alarms. Documents police and fire service requests in an electronic records management and dispatch system. Operates National Crime Information Center (NCIC) console, a computer-aided mobile dispatch system, and Zetron interoperable radio console.
Minimum Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Certification/Licensure State of Texas Public Safety Telecommunicator or Eligibility for certification by waiver.
- Possess a valid Texas Class C Driver’s License
- Regular, consistent, and punctual attendance for the assigned work hours is required.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Receives calls concerning crimes, emergencies, and other requests for police assistance; monitors and responds to 911 calls. Will be receiving payments for impound vehicles.
2. Operates a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) console, a computer-aided mobile dispatch (CAD) system, and a Zetron interoperable radio console.
3. Monitor calls on fire and burglar alarms and alarm systems for all buildings within the city.
4. Broadcasts orders to patrol officers in the vicinity to investigate complaints or requests when appropriate, and relay instructions or questions from remote units.
5. Coordinates departmental paging in the event of a city emergency.
6. Researches, prepares and directs tax studies for internal and external sources.
7. Relays radio and telephone messages between police officers and the citizens.
8. Performs dispatch duties; responds to walk-in and telephone traffic questions.
9. Controls access to Police Department secured areas; monitors the department’s closed-circuit camera and intercom systems.
10. Performs various clerical duties including completing the electronic dispatch log and filing police reports and warrant files.
11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

· Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
· Ability to interact and communicate with people over the telephone, often in stressful situations.
· Ability to effectively operate a Zetron interoperable radio console.
· Ability to perform multiple tasks and solve problems in a technical setting.
· Knowledge of radio dispatch regulations, procedures, protocols, and/or equipment.
· Knowledge of fire and burglar alarm systems reporting.
· Skill in the use of computers and ability to use NCIC identification and Computer Aided Dispatch software.
Conditions of Employment
· Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
· Must successfully maintain the State of Texas Public Safety Telecommunicator certification.
· Must successfully complete all internal police dispatch and related training.
· Successful candidates must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination, and medical history check.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
