JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: PET/CT Technologist

Reports to: Clinical Director 2022

Summary Description:

Performs Nuclear Medicine/PET examinations for diagnostic and therapeutic (site-specific) purposes under the direction of a physician. Prepares patients, administers prescribed doses of radioactive materials, performs calculations, and manipulates data according to established parameters. Works closely with the team to implement specialized research PET protocols. Assists with maintaining research records in compliance with the research physician. Ensures proper preparation and ordering of radioactive material, calibrates equipment, ensures appropriate quality control, and monitors patients—this position is classified as non-exempt under FLSA.

The PET Technologist reviews and takes responsibility for the image quality of PET exams. The PET Technologist is a resource to co-workers regarding technical and/or other PET imaging/patient management issues when questions arise. The PET Technologist operates CT portion of the PET/CT equipment to make clinical diagnostic images as directed by physicians and performs diagnostic procedures per protocols.

Essential Functions:

1. Reports to work as scheduled and on time per policy with predictable regular attendance. Time away from work is approved and taken by established policies.

2. Takes all reasonable steps to maintain confidentiality of all information related to patients, medical staff, employees, and as appropriate, other information, ensuring compliance with HIPAA mandates.

3. Demonstrates positive interpersonal communication in dealing with all others. Recognizes and respects differences in the workplace. Demonstrates openness, sensitivity, and commitment to coworkers, patients, family members, and any other visitors to OAI.

4. Consistently demonstrates and incorporates safety and infection control principles into daily activities. Uses protective equipment and takes appropriate precautions whenever there is potential contact with blood, body fluids, and/or chemicals. Maintains current knowledge of disaster policies and participates appropriately in disaster drills. Expresses and applies principles of body mechanics to prevent injury and accidents.

5. Displays consistent commitment to customer service and teamwork. Displays personal behavior that has a positive impact on the organization.

7. Demonstrates personal commitment to staying current in the field of knowledge, expanding knowledge and skill, and contributing to organizational success.

8. Displays ability to work in an ever-changing environment and participate constructively in change processes.

9. Attends staff meetings and completes education program as requested or approved by OAI.

10. Follow the protocol manual for PET Imaging as directed by the Medical Director of PET and/or OAI.

11. Develop and maintain a Procedures and Protocol Manual that addresses daily operations and special situations regarding patient care, consent, emergencies, as well as maintenance and repair of the equipment and PET facility.

12. Performs and maintains prescribed quality control testing according to State and Federal requirements and immediately reports any results outside acceptable limits to the manager.

13. Prepares examinations for interpretation including, correct identification and processing images, adequate clinical history, proper charging and data entry functions and appropriate previous images for comparison.

14. Provides high-quality imaging examinations when performing all Nuclear Medicine procedures. Demonstrates technical proficiency in producing diagnostic scans and recognizes anatomical structures that are visualized.

15. Completes all pertinent documentation including charge sheets, history forms, worksheets, and any other necessary paperwork.

16. Administers radioactive materials properly and according to State and Federal requirements and OAI protocol, as well as adhering to the appropriate radiation protection guidelines.

17. Orders, receives, administers, and disposes of radioactive materials properly and according to State and Federal requirements and performs radiation survey checks of department area.

18. Provides for patient care and safety using professional judgment by using policies and procedures.

19. Assists physicians with procedures as required.

20. Performs and maintains prescribed quality control testing according to State and Federal requirements and immediately reports any results outside acceptable limits to the supervisor.

21. Provides complete documentation of all pertinent information to provide accurate and timely services to all customers.

22. Routinely performs appointment confirmation telephone calls to verify the patient appointment time location and understanding of the procedure.

23. Performs other related duties as requested.

Qualifications:

1. High school graduate and a graduate of an accredited School of Radiological Science.

2. Hold a current license from the American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT) and Oregon State Board and maintain educational requirements as outlined by the ARRT and Oregon Board. A certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) is required.

3. One year of clinical Nuclear Medicine experience is required.

4. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of all phases of nuclear medicine including mathematics, physics, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, basic nursing, and equipment manipulation.

5. Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) with a CT Certification preferred.

6. Able to meet the mental and physical demands of this position (see ADA Form).

7. Must have basic computer skills.

8. Demonstrated ability to maintain day-to-day workflow and manage communication in the department while remaining flexible and adapting to changing needs and priorities.

9. Ability to provide high-quality patient care and answer patient’s questions without providing a diagnosis or causing alarm.

10. Excellent communication and customer service skills required. Proper grammar skills are required, including speaking, reading, and writing.

11. BLS certification required.
