Job description

About Rivian:
Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role Summary:
A Torque Technician is responsible for keeping the electronic and manual torque tools at Rivian functioning at peak efficiency. This role includes being the immediate response team for any torque tool issues in the production areas to minimize the impact these issues have on production volume and throughput rates. In this function, you will diagnose the issues with the tools, bring in the relevant process partners from factory software, maintenance, facilities or engineering, and work collaboratively to correct the faults as quickly as possible. This will require both a high level of expertise in the tools and controllers, and an ability to think on your feet to find the most efficient solution for the issue at hand. When you are not responding to line-calls you will be maintaining existing tools, including preventative maintenance, calibration activities (both in-line and off-line) and hardware repairs on tools and tool attachments. These repairs will mandate having and maintaining an inventory of tools and spare parts, controllers, and attachments. You will also work intimately with the relevant software programs (e.g. ToolTalk2, ToolsNet, QAS, GagePack, Tableau, etc.) to monitor and adjust torque programs based on the specific joint design to ensure that each joint and tool meet the expectations and requirements set forth by the fastener engineers. You will also support line-balancing activities and the roll-out of new tools and controllers per the aligned plan with Process Engineering.
Your responsibilities will also include maintaining and evolving dashboards to track and report on KPIs showing the activities on and performance of the Torque Tools, line-call response time, resolution time, and overall tool- or line-down time, among others. You will be responsible for keeping the relevant dashboards and KanBan boards up to date and supporting Rivian Operating System (RiOS) initiatives and activities in your area.
Responsibilities:
  • Respond to and resolve tooling issues affecting production in a timely and effective manner
  • Manage Calibration Activities for production and repair tools
  • Maintain a sufficient inventory of tools, parts, controllers, and modules to support the replacement of tools which are in need of repair or calibration (including keeping the inventory management system up to date)
  • Diagnose faults on tools in-line and off-line, and define corrective actions
  • Complete minor repair on torque tools
  • Manage shipping of tools to manufacturer for repairs that cannot be completed in-house.
  • Set up new tools, controllers, and validate changes supporting cross-functional teams
  • Manage tooling programs, including regular audits and updates of run-down programs, including multi-spindle programs
  • Interface with the Residual Torque Team to address consistently low torques
Qualifications:
  • Excellent hands-on problem-solving ability.
  • Experience working with and on automated, semi-automated and manual torque tools of all sorts, especially those from the manufacturers Atlas Copco and Estic (pulse tools).
  • Experience with MES or a similar operational production control and recording system.
  • Expertise with relevant software (e.g. ToolsTalk, ToolNet, MES, QAS, etc.)
  • Ability to think on your feet and work under time-pressure.
  • Robust understanding of torque application methods and the effect that these have on the final joint.
  • Attention to detail and a desire for high quality, precision work.
  • Ability to work effectively across functional and operational boundaries.
  • Good electronic communication software skills (MS Office, Minitab, email, etc.).
  • Good interpersonal skills with a focus on collaboration in cross-functional teams
  • Desire to work in a strong cross-functional and collaborative environment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; sit; use hands to grasp, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • In the performance of the duties of this job the employee may be required to travel (rarely), drive a motor vehicle (rarely), communicate using telephone, text and e-mail (constantly).
Education Requirements:
  • Certification for repair and calibration of Atlas Copco Tools preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and think at a high level, as evidenced by completion of college level courses.
