I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Assist with all aspects of patient clinic visit includes: rooming patients, performing intake assessment with appropriate medical record documentation, preparation of patient for clinician evaluation, dressing changes, suture/ staple removal as directed.
2. Takes and records vital signs including blood pressures, temperature, pulse, respiration, weights, height, etc. Collects and transports specimens to appropriate departments
3. Performs cast work for arms, hands, legs, body casts, bi-valve casts, corrective casts, cast wedging, brace molding and splinting with plaster and fiberglass materials. Instructs patients in cast care.
4. Sets up, applies, maintains and removes traction and suspension devices. Assists with the transport and transfer of patients in and out of skeletal traction. Coordinate patient's ambulating status with physical therapy staff, and adjusts length, foot strike and fit as needed.
5. Applies and adjusts orthopedic leg and arm braces, canes and crutches, and prefabricated fracture braces. Instructs patients in gait training.
6. Document all patient and family education on the PFER form and or as per clinical policy.
7. Assists with the set up and application for procedures such as pin removal, wound debridement, dressing changes and suture removals. Assist physician/LIP with surgical procedures utilizing appropriate aseptic techniques.
8. May fabricate orthotics and maintain orthotic lab.
9. Assists in moving, lifting, and positioning patient and transport of patient.
10. Assists inpatient admissions and transfers.
11. Maintains sterile instrument supply. Assists in the setup, maintenance, disassembly and cleaning of patient equipment.
12. Maintains supplies and equipment. Assists in ordering and evaluating of products. Assures accurate inventory of supplies based on approval levels. Rotates stock as required. Initiates requisitions for re-supply or special items.
13. Responsible for completion and accuracy of patient electronic billing and other related billing documentation as required.
14. May utilize medical record system to schedule a variety of patient appointments. Follows unit procedures for arriving patients and scheduling follow-up appointments.
15. May have unit secretary or administrative responsibilities including, but not limited to, maintaining logs, organizing patient care charts for admission/discharge/transfer and maintenance of medical records. May transcribe physician orders, including the use of computerized order entry system. May issue and/or verify managed care referrals or patient insurance coverage and eligibility.
16. May collect co-payments from patients for visits, maintain records and makes daily cash deposits. May batch and submit daily encounter forms and information to the Central Billing Office.
17. Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ needs by acting as a source of information and approaches all interactions with the intention of building positive rapport and relationships.
18. Demonstrates effective problem-solving abilities for routine situations and requests assistance from identified resources when more direction is needed.
19. Participates in unit-based quality improvement initiatives.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
2. One of the following is required upon hire or transfer:
a. Certified Nursing Assistant license in MA.
b. Medical Assistant credential administered by a recognized school accredited by the Department of Health or a program approved by UMMMC (ARMA, etc.).
3. Certified with the National Board of Orthopedic Technologists (NBCOT) or registered with the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP). If not credentialed as a Medical Assistant, all employees must obtain a Medical Assistant credential within 6 months of hire or transfer date. All employees must maintain the credential.
4. BLS certification.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology is required.
2. Strong computer skills required for use of EMR.
3. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to gather information from individuals, build relationships that support collaborative work within the department and across the organization and provide exceptional service to patients.
Preferred:
1. Minimum of two years of related patient care experience.
2. Experience including exposure to cast application and removal.
3. Demonstrated ability with cast and traction set up.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Hand dexterity, hearing and visual acuity necessary to respond to a patient or take direction from a provider, apply and remove casts and other orthopedic devices, adjust equipment, observe and describe patient observations. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Position requires work indoors in a patient care environment.
