We have an immediate opening for a Technical Writer, Technical Communications Editor, located in either Milwaukee, WI or Longview, TX, responsible for the development and design of Maintenance and Operational Manuals associated with our Loader product line.
Research engineering drawings; blueprints; electrical, hydraulic, and/or pneumatic schematics; manufacturing operating procedures; applicable industry standards; other internal and external documents; interviews with engineers, service technicians, tradesmen and assemblers; attend equipment kick-off meetings; and coordination with third-party manufacturers and suppliers for information regarding equipment installation and removal, assembly and disassembly, maintenance, adjustments, repairs and lubrication.
Modify engineering terms, jargon, and complex principles into language that is technically accurate, yet easily understood by persons without specialized education.
Use specialized application software (PTC Arbortext Editor, Windchill Content Management System (CMS), etc.) to develop and convert content that is formatted in accordance with departmental standards.
Search existing data banks SAP, LinkOne, Marketing Communications, Salesforce, etc., for drawings, photographs, or technical information that support the informational objective of the documents you are deemed responsible for.
Render new images, take photos, touch up existing photos or drawings, etc., of subject mining equipment, components, processes, and procedures to provide greater understanding.
Use Adobe Photo Shop, Adobe Illustrator, SAP Visual Enterprise Author (SAP VEA), or equivalent company sponsored software to modify and format graphics to accentuate specific information.
Manage review projects through the departments Document Review Site to ensure in-depth, timely review of prepared documentation by engineering, service, product support, legal, safety departments, etc.
Edit final documents, based on review comments, to confirm that technical accuracy, format, spelling, grammar, punctuation, style and reading comprehension level are in accordance with published standards.
Use the CMS and other digital distribution systems to extract and assemble completed books for distribution via print and digital delivery.
If the new hire is located in Milwaukee, WI, they will be required to travel 2 weeks per quarter to Longview to coordinate with Engineers, Product Support, etc., to gather appropriate information necessary to support the development of the Manuals.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technical Communications, or related degree, or related job experience, or related military experience.
- 5+ years of experience in a Technical Writing position in heavy or mining equipment industry is required.
- Understanding of bill of materials, engineering release notices, and engineering drawings required.
- Understand principles and processes for communicating about technical subjects (including problem solving methods, audience analysis, rhetorical analysis, conventions of format, and usability). STE experience preferred. Experience working in a DITA environment required.
- Experience structuring XML documents and reviewing for validity.
- Experience using the following software: Arbortext Editor, or other XML editing tools; CMS; Adobe products such as Illustrator and Photoshop.
- Experience managing to deliverables and milestones: on time/within budget/meeting business needs.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong technical background in electrical and/or mechanical technologies.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work as needed.
- Strong team player on cross-functional teams with excellent interpersonal skills.
