Northrop Grumman Space Systems designs, builds and delivers space related systems to customers around the world. Our main products include launch vehicles and related propulsion systems; strategic deterrents; satellites and associated space components and services; payload and ground systems; and other strategic space-based initiatives.
We are currently seeking a Technical Accounting Analyst 2/3 to join the Space Sector Reporting Team in our McLean VA location.
This position will report to the Manager of Technical Accounting and perform technical GAAP accounting research as well as other financial analysis (as required). This role will work closely with Sector Financial Reporting and Planning, Program Finance, Shared Service Centers and Corporate Financial Reporting.
Position Responsibilities and duties include:
- Providing on call Technical Accounting guidance.
- Reviewing revenue recognition checklists, concluding on treatment and providing guidance on revenue accounting under ASC606.
- Assisting the monthly financial statement close process, including preparing Costpoint, SAP & HFM journal entries on a recurring basis.
- Assisting in researching and analyzing application of accounting standards to complex business transactions.
- Assisting in drafting white papers summarizing Technical Accounting issues, application of accounting guidance to the company, alternatives available and recommendations.
- Preparing and presenting accounting and policy training on an as-needed basis.
- Preparing Costpoint journal entries on a monthly basis to support the close process, including purchase accounting, environmental accounting and other general entries.
- Providing support and responding to questions form external auditors.
- Performing miscellaneous financial analysis, as required.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
Basic Qualifications:
This requisition may be filled at either a level 2 or a level 3.
Basic Qualifications for a Level 2:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Management (or a related field) from an accredited institution with 3+ years of directly related professional experience - OR - a Master's degree with 1+ years of directly related professional experience.
- Public Accounting, IF directly relevant, may count for up to an additional year of experience for each year of relevant experience.
Basic Qualifications for a Level 3:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Management (or a related field) from an accredited institution with 6+ years of directly related professional experience - OR - a Master's degree with 4+ years of directly related professional experience.
- Public Accounting, IF directly relevant, may count for up to an additional year of experience for each year of relevant experience.
Additional Basic qualifications for both levels:
- Basic computer and financial analysis skills, including use and understanding of spreadsheets.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong experience using MS Office applications including Word and Excel.
- US citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Recent Big 4 or recognized Public Accounting firm audit experience.
- GAAP accounting proficiency and research experience.
- Self-motivated, yet functions well in a team environment.
- Prior experience in the aerospace & defense industry, or experience with cost-to-cost accounting and estimates at completion (EACs).
- Experience focusing on continuous improvement and identifying efficiencies in recurring processes.
