  • Graduation from an accredited college or university.
  • Requirements as set by the State of New Hampshire Certification Authorities and Board of School Committee regulations.
  • State of NH Teacher Certification in General Special Education (1900) or other approved certification status may be considered.
Specific Core Function: To help students learn subject matter and/or skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible members of society.
Responsibilities of the Position:
  • Meet with classroom teachers and Building Principals to discuss individual programs to be designed for children who will receive special education.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students and encourages mutual respect and effective learning.
  • Plans/teaches lessons that employ a variety of instructional techniques that, when implemented, meet the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Utilizes district curriculum goals and objectives to write comprehensive lesson plans designed to meet the learning needs of all students.
  • Schedule classes for specific remedial instruction.
  • Adhere to special education policies and procedures for developing, revising, reviewing, and assessing special education programs.
  • Recommend methods to be used, evaluating the methods on an ongoing basis.
  • Evaluate and order materials necessary for the Special Education Program and assist teachers in their use, when necessary.
  • Evaluate the progress of each child enrolled in the Special Education Program as indicated by the IEP, District, and statewide assessments.
  • Conduct in-service workshops for regular classroom teachers, when requested.
  • Provide information to and counsel regular classroom teachers on an on-going basis.
  • Keep parents informed of their child(ren)'s progress regularly.
  • Plan and teach skill lessons to students assigned.
  • Serve as a member of school wide committees.
  • Utilize alternative methods and materials to complement on-going classroom curriculum.
  • Monitor a program of recording and charting direct and daily measures of student performance.
  • Plan, develop, and supervise annual Individual Education Programs (IEP) required for identified students.
  • Participate in workshops for teachers at institutional levels to develop materials and activities in areas of recognized concern.
  • Maintain a special education room where commercial and teacher-prepared materials are made available for teachers to use in their classrooms.
  • Assist teachers in the development of classroom management procedures including record keeping and report procedures which permit maximum attention to individual differences.
  • Monitor individual student performance through the use of standardized instruments and observation.
  • Develop purposeful communication between classroom teachers and special education room aides for the benefit of the student.
  • Assume responsibility for professional development, for keeping current with the literature, new research findings and improved techniques, and for attending appropriate professional meetings.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of State and Federal forms related to the Special Education students.
  • Maintains State certification through approved professional development activities.
  • Follows District policies, procedures, goals, and approved curriculum for content areas.

  • Knowledge of testing instruments and their application to the academic setting
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable
Essential Physical Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate with students
  • Standing at blackboard and in front of class to perform classroom instruction
  • Sitting at desk to perform duties associated with classroom instruction
  • Ability to move around the classroom to supervise, interact, and communicate with students
  • Escort students to other classes that occur at locations outside the assigned classroom
  • Operate a personal computer, telephone, or other related equipment
  • Sufficient mobility to function within a general classroom setting:

Specified Length/Hours of Position: This is an affiliated (MEA) position under the Teacher Association negotiated contract, following the school calendar with additional workshop days.
