Job description

Provide appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to provide intensive instruction to struggling readers. Enable students to develop literacy competencies and skills to be successful.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Bachelor's degree from accredited universityMaster Reading Teacher Certification or Reading Specialist Certification preferredMaster's degree preferredValid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject and level assignedSPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:Knowledge of current research about the nature and purposes of reading,Knowledge of oral and written languageKnowledge of widely used approaches to reading, oral, and written language instructionKnowledge of major theories of language development, cognition, and learningAbility to use theories to implement a well-planned and comprehensive reading programKnowledge of Section 504 goal setting process and implementationDemonstrates a commitment to ongoing professional learning/developmentAbility to instruct students and manage their behaviorStrong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide focused delivery of instruction in individual and/or small group setting to assist students having difficulties meeting academic standards
  • Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned
  • Use information from norm-referenced tests, criterion-referenced tests, formal and informal reading inventories, observations, anecdotal records, and multiple other indicators of students' progress to improve reading intervention and student learning
  • Assist with the development of the English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) Intervention curriculum including assessments
  • Coordinate the implementation of the ELAR Intervention course outline and pacing guides
  • Share knowledge; collaborate, and assist colleagues in the area of reading
  • Participate in building-level language arts curriculum meetings and other professional development activities with staff
  • Maintain inventory of reading intervention instructional and professional materials
  • Provide in-depth diagnostic assessments to students referred for reading deficiencies including dyslexia
  • Provide intervention/support/ to students as needed
  • Monitor progress of students in reading development
  • Provide incentive programs to motivate students to read and write
  • Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements
  • Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) if assigned
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned; sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal
  • Be a positive role model for students, support the mission of the school district
  • Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve job-related skills
  • Keep informed of and comply with laws as well as district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, committee meetings and special events as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Three years of successful teaching experience preferred
