Job Description
Teacher of the Visually Impaired - Itinerant
PAY GRADE: Pay Plan 000, Pay Grade 35 (-10)
189 day contract per school year. Salary will be determined by the successful applicant's educational and teaching experience. (BA degree - $49,661-$77,051; MA degree - $58,294-$89,878).
LOCATION: Work area is Central Rivers AEA - home office must be within the AEA area - possibly
near Cedar Falls or Clear Lake area.
WORK UNIT: Department of Education: Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired
DESCRIPTION:
  • School-year appointments. Position starts August 2024. Service regions cover multiple Iowa school districts. The ability to travel throughout a designated region within Iowa on a daily basis required. Criminal and other relevant background checks also required.
  • In collaboration with Area Education Agencies (AEAs) and Local Education Agencies (LEAs), and using an itinerant model, the Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) provides appropriate support and/or instruction to students with visual impairments, in their local schools and home settings.
  • Formulates appropriate educational objective, activities, evaluation, goals, and instruction.
  • Reports student growth and programs to parents periodically.
  • Participates as a member of multidisciplinary teams; involved with evaluations; educational planning; development of Individualized Educational Plans (IEP); program implementation. Provides written reports and documentation. May lead IEP meetings.
To Be Considered:
Bachelor's degree in education plus experience using a computer and other office equipment required. Candidates must meet State of Iowa teacher licensure requirements with an endorsement in visual impairment by the time of appointment. Candidates possessing a special education endorsement may also be considered, but must complete the visual impairment endorsement within three years of appointment (financial assistance available for necessary coursework). Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in education and experience working with students who are blind and Visually Impaired preferred.
  • Experience working with special education students.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
  1. One of the following current licenses from the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners:
    1. School Psychologist; or
    2. School Counseling; or
    3. Speech Language Pathologist.
  • All of the following (a and b):
    1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in orientation and mobility; and
    2. Possession of a current Iowa Orientation and Mobility Specialist license.
  • All of the following (a and b):
    1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field; and
    2. Possession of a current Iowa Teaching Certificate.
