POSITION SUMMARY
Great Salt Lake Institute seeks an enthusiastic staff member to manage field work, undergraduate research, student internships, grants and budgets, and outreach activities. This role coordinates all activities of the institute and supports student success by creating unique learning experiences, connecting students to networks, and building skills for career preparation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Advising and Support:
- Provide advice and guidance to students on academic requirements and departmental resources.
- Facilitate undergraduate research efforts including supervising and mentoring students, developing project ideas, providing continuity, and supporting safety protocols.
- Manage internal and external internships and assist with career connections through external networks.
Faculty Support:
- Provide support for the GSLI Director and Assistant Director in coordinating all activities of GSLI.
- Assist associated faculty and their student research teams by leading field excursions, managing the field room organization and equipment, participating in summer undergraduate research training sessions, and facilitating projects with logistical support.
Program Coordination:
- Coordinate departmental programs, workshops, or initiatives, including scheduling, logistics, and resource management.
- Connect GSLI to other campus departments focused on student success such as the Gore Giovale Center for Innovative Leadership, Environmental Center, Outdoor Education and Leadership Program, and Career Center.
- Coordinate with Enrollment Management in recruiting prospective students, Accounting and Institutional Advancement in grant management, and Marketing and Communications for press opportunities.
- Create synergistic connections for outreach to the community with the Dumke Center for Civic Engagement and the Meldrum Science Center. Manage GSLI programming and events for Westminster students, staff, and faculty.
Grants and Account Management:
- Oversee purchasing, invoicing, and accounting for GSLI faculty and student employees.
- Manage and track grant spending and budgets.
- Participate in grant writing to support projected budgets associated with projects.
Event Management:
- Plan and execute events, including promotional activities and on-site support.
Data Analysis:
- Collect, analyze, and report on data related to program participation and outcomes.
Communication and Outreach:
- Manage departmental communication channels, ensuring timely and relevant information is shared.
- Create a network of partnerships that are beneficial to our students and faculty by building connections with external organizations interested in the lake, including state agencies, industry, NGOs, and other academic organizations/individuals.
- Coordinate event planning, programming, and outreach, with other organizations.
- Working with Marketing and Communications internally, oversee media relations for GSLI and provide content for the GSLI website and online resources.
Supervision:
- Oversee the work and scheduling of student employees while providing direction and assistance as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree and relevant experience in field
- Interest in outdoor education and/or research and field experience
- Ability to adapt programming to align with GSLI priorities
Strong organizational and project-management skills - Effective interpersonal and communication abilities with ability to demonstrate effective relationship management
- Proficient in relevant software and technology
- Commitment to enhancing student success and departmental goals
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Great Salt Lake research or work experience
- Experience within an academic setting, informal education, or outreach
- Project management experience
- Budget oversight and tracking including grant management
