Summary:
This position instructs classes in band or orchestra and assists students in the development of instrumental techniques and music reading.
Essential Duties:
- Aligns instruction with the NC Essential Standards for Music and ensures a sequential course of study.
- Recognizes the various ways in which learning takes place and knows appropriate levels of intellectual, social and emotional development of their students.
- Establishes and maintains an orderly and supportive classroom environment in which students are actively participating and showing respect for one another and the teacher.
- Utilizes a variety of methods and adapts music instruction to benefit all students.
- Integrates appropriate music technologies in their instruction.
- Incorporates a variety of methods to assess and analyze student work and what they have learned.
- Utilizes a grading system that is consistent, fair, and supportable by the school/district.
- Collaborates with other arts staff and assists classroom teachers in arts integration, alignment and cross-coordination of the curriculum.
- Collaborates with principals, colleagues, and feeder school music staff to ensure continuity in enrollment and continuation of the program.
- Works with Materials Management Inventory System staff to maintain an accurate inventory of musical equipment. Works to keep all instruments in playing condition and free from maintenance.
- Maintains necessary forms and records for instrumental music study.
- Self-Initiates opportunities for personal professional development and growth.
- Communicates program needs to principal.
- May coordinate field trips.
- Seeks out alternative funding sources to supplement program needs.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Minimum
Bachelor's Degree in Music Education
Desirable
Master's Degree in Performance, or Music Education preferred
Licensing / Certification Requirements:
Must have North Carolina certification or credentials to attain NC certification. Strong personal string instrument experience preferred for Orchestra position
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
- Knowledge of Common Core and NC Essential Standards.
- Knowledge of North Carolina Testing Program in regards to End of Course Testing.
