Job Title: Part-Time Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing
Wage/Hour Status: Exempt
Pay Grade: Admin/Prof 4
Work Calendar: 187 Days

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The primary role of the Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing is to provide auditory evaluation, support, assistance, and services to students who are deaf or Hard of Hearing. This individual will provide services as outlined in Individual Family Service Plans (IFSP), 504 plans, and/or Individualized Educational Plans (IEP). Students served may range in age from birth through 21 and may or may not have additional disabilities. This staff member also supports the service delivery, district-wide, of the Instructional and Related Services team.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification
  • Bachelor's degree from accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate appropriate for placement as a Teacher of The Deaf & Hard of Hearing, according to the Texas Administrative Code, Ch. 231, Subchapter F, Rule §231.619.

Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures specific to the role of Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing
  • Knowledge of and ability to conduct Functional Hearing Evaluations and Learning Media Assessments on students
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction at all grade levels
  • Ability to develop IEP goals/objectives specific to skills needed, as related to hearing loss
  • Ability to facilitate the ARD/IEP process for students who are deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Ability to individualize services to students and work effectively with them one-to-one
  • Knowledge of the developmental needs of students related to hearing loss for students of varying ability levels and ages
  • Ability to work cooperatively with campus teachers to assure that students who are deaf or Hard of Hearing are able to participate in classroom activities with necessary accommodations
  • Ability to select from a variety of communication modes to accommodate various communication styles and preferences for students who are deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Knowledge of resources available through the district and in the community in support of Hearing needs
  • Ability to demonstrate strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to adjust and be flexible to a multitude of situations in the school environment
  • Ability to manage and maintain all assistive technology related to students in the district who are deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work with outside agencies such as ECI, RDSPD, TWC, MHDD, ENTs, Audiologists, etc.; including supporting interagency coordination and transition services

Experience
  • Job experience or university training with students who are deaf or Hard of Hearing

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  1. Provide:
  • direct services to DHH Students
  • consultative services to teachers and parents
  • monitoring services to students; and
  • liaison services with medical doctors and audiologists on behalf of students
  1. Serve students who are deaf or Hard of Hearing from birth through 21 at various locations that may include home, daycare, etc.
  2. Coordinate/Consult with case managers and supervisors, related services personnel, parents and families, caregivers, medical professionals, ESC staff, etc. for ongoing support and in preparation for the 504/IEP meetings.
  3. Obtain and interpret audiological/medical reports as they relate to educational environments.
  4. Perform functional hearing evaluations and learning media assessments for all initial referrals and all re-evaluation for students in need of DHH services.
  5. Establish, document, and maintain A.I. eligibility (Parts A, B, C).
  6. Write goals and objectives for IEPs.
  7. Facilitate ARDs and 504 meetings for students who are deaf or Hard of Hearing, complete documentation, and disseminate to staff and parents.
  8. Attend district, local, and regional staff meetings, trainings, workshops, etc. that pertain to DHH.
  9. Provide instruction and support in the use of amplification, including hearing aids, cochlear implants, personal FM systems, and classroom FM systems.
  10. Maintain inventory of FM equipment and educational materials and send equipment for repair when necessary.
  11. Attend ARDs at Texas School for the Deaf on behalf of DSISD students.
  12. Provide collaborative instruction as needed in order for students who are deaf or Hard of Hearing to learn a wide variety of compensatory skills.
  13. Assist in providing and setting up all necessary equipment and materials to ensure appropriate education for students who are deaf or Hard of Hearing.
  14. Provide consultative services to school personnel and parents of students who are deaf or Hard of Hearing.
  15. Maintain an efficient itinerant schedule that maximizes student services.
  16. Provide direction to teachers and paraprofessionals for the DHH program.
  17. Provide district-wide support as part of the Instructional and Related Services team (this includes supporting instruction, testing, extracurricular environments, and IEP/504 documentation).
Communication
  1. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  2. Maintain a positive and professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  3. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Other
  1. Maintain confidentiality regarding student and coworker information and as required by FERPA.
  2. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  3. Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  4. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  5. Attend and participate in departmental meetings.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards.
