Inspector V Workplace Safety (OSHCON Safety Consultant) in the Austin office
This position, with the Occupational Safety and Health Consultation (OSHCON) Program, performs advanced inspections and technical consultation services to reduce safety and health risks in a wide variety of worksites and industries throughout the assigned territory. OSHCON consultants enjoy a rewarding career helping Texas employers understand and comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations; identify and correct hazards; and develop effective safety and health programs in a non-regulatory capacity. OSHCON consultants receive ongoing professional development and training, work regular hours with flexible schedules, and hone their occupational safety and health skills by working with different employers in a variety of industries each day.
This position:
• Conducts on-site inspections (and basic sampling surveys, as needed) of employers' worksites/activities to identify potential exposure to safety and health hazards and provides recommendations for correction and abatement.
• Assesses the need for health-related testing and exposure determinations and addresses health issues commensurate with training and educational background.
• Review employers' injury and illness logs, written safety programs, and employee training programs.
• Works with employers to protect employees' safety and health in the workplace by assessing and evaluating employer's programs, policies, and procedures to ensure employees' exposure to any risks is greatly reduced or eliminated.
• Assists Texas employers in developing and implementing effective safety and health management systems so they can educate their employees about cleanliness, safety, and sanitation in the workplace.
• Provides interpretations and recommendations to employers to reduce occupational safety and health risks inside and outside the workplace and to comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
• Provides formal and informal training with an emphasis on safety and health hazards in the workplace.
• Seeks out employers to provide OSHCON assistance through telephone calls, presentations, correspondence, and other methods as appropriate.
• Works with trade associations, business organizations, and other industry groups to promote the OSHCON program and safe workplaces through formal and informal meetings and presentations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
This position requires:
• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
• A minimum of one year of full-time experience in occupational safety and health along with providing safety and health education and training.
• Possession of a privately owned motor vehicle to drive to and from the duty station, meetings, consultation activities, training, and other work assignments.
Note:
Experience, relevant to the position, may be substituted for education. Education may not be substituted for experience.
For positions that require driving as an essential function of the position:
Skill: Operating a motor vehicle in a safe and courteous manner in compliance with traffic laws.
Ability: Satisfy the requirements to maintain a fully qualified driving status.
Additional job details:
• This position requires regular work attendance. The position may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule. If eligible, the employee must have a secure, dedicated workspace with reliable broadband internet service. The ideal candidate must be available for weekly meetings and group collaboration via Microsoft Teams and other applications during regular business hours.
• This position requires knowledge and experience in OSHA safety and health regulations.
• Inspections involve moderate physical exertion including lifting and carrying equipment, climbing stairs, standing, walking, kneeling, and bending.
• Exposure to a wide range of hazardous and unpleasant conditions during investigations, including toxic materials, high noise levels, and extreme temperatures. Use of assigned personal protective clothing and equipment is required when needed.
• This position may be eligible for a hybrid work environment. Therefore, employees must have a secure workspace with internet service, the ability to maintain a consistent work schedule and be available for team meetings or group collaborations via Microsoft Teams and other applications during regular business hours.
• May be asked to work variable or extended hours.
• This position occasionally may require overnight travel to carry out the essential functions of the job.
Preferences for this position include:
• A degree in a Safety and Health related field, a degree in health sciences, engineering, or a related field with one or more years of full-time experience in areas related to workplace safety.
• Experience in occupational safety and health inspections, sampling surveys, and audits.
• Experience in the construction industry.
• Experience using basic occupational health testing and survey equipment.
• Have a nationally recognized certification such as CSP, CIH, ASP, OHST, CSHO, or other safety & health-related certifications.
• Bilingual language skills in English and Spanish (oral and written).
This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:
• Federal occupational safety and health laws, codes, and standards to comply with OSHA.
• The components of an effective safety and health program.
• Principles and methods of field safety and health inspections.
• Proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
This position requires demonstrated skill in:
• Planning, decision-making, and problem-solving.
• Effective oral and verbal communication.
• Using basic testing or monitoring equipment such as sound level meters, thermal imaging guns, light meters, etc.
• Using the Internet to search for employer information; ability to use Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, One Note, and PowerPoint); and using SharePoint filing system.
• Planning, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
• Delivering impromptu presentations to facilitate training and instruction.
• Working with confidential, time-sensitive information in a professional manner.
• Operating a motor vehicle in a safe and courteous manner in compliance with traffic laws.
This position requires the demonstrated ability to:
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Apply critical thinking (interpret and convey the requirements of laws, directives, and procedures to devise solutions for problems).
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external customers.
• Gather, assemble, correlate, and analyze facts.
