Tax Director - State & Local (Salt)

We're hiring for a State & Local Tax (SALT) Director. As a SALT Director, you will be responsible for planning and completing engagements in various areas of state and local taxation, including, but not limited to, multistate income/franchise tax, sales/use tax, and unclaimed property. Responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:

• Perform tax research and provide technical advice on State & Local tax issues
• Assist multi-state companies with State & Local tax compliance
• Investigate and respond to tax agency notices, including those involving unreported income, delinquency penalties, unfiled forms and returns, enforced collection (liens, levies, warrants, garnishments)
• Coordinate audit defense strategies and voluntary disclosure procedures (VDAs), including communicating with auditors, responding to IDR's, gathering documents and information from clients
• Taking a lead role and overseeing all aspects of tax agency audits, including communicating with auditors, responding to IDR's, gathering documents and information from clients
• Directing & overseeing tax research, reviewing prepared written memoranda discussing and analyzing tax issues
• Communicate effectively with tax agency personnel, clients, senior and junior staff
• Addresses questions on advanced technical tax matters from team members and upper-level client management
• Identifies tax risk management issues and proposes potential solutions through research and collaboration with Engagement Partner
• Works with Engagement Senior Manager/Manager to oversee review process of tax procedures
• Works with Engagement Senior Manager/Manager to oversee thorough review of tax workpapers on a timely basis and assures tax evidence is in accordance with firm's documentation standards
• Challenges the client, where appropriate, on the quality of their financial data to ensure the integrity of the tax work performed
• Demonstrates an ability to critically assess reliability of client information and planned tax approach throughout the engagement
• Demonstrates advanced level tax review and research skills
• Oversees engagement workflow and monitors that tasks are assigned and completed on a timely basis
• Manages several engagements with a wide oversight of work in their specific area
• Reviews client tax returns and research as final approver
• Advise clients of the tax implications relating to their business objectives, recommend alternate courses of action as well as identify different methods of complying with state tax regulations
• Identifies and promotes new business opportunities within our core capabilities

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with a preference of study in Accounting or related field
• 9+ years' experience in a similar role
• Prior experience managing engagements and clients
• Licensed CPA or admission to a State Bar
• Able to work independently, but also work well with others
• Strong technical and broad based advisory and client management skills
• Formal mentoring relationships with all levels of staff

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Taxation or Accounting
• 5+ years' supervisory experience in a similar role
• Experience with pass through entities, business structuring, and nonprofit organizations
• Become a leader in a tax niche
• Software Experience - CCH ProSystem, Microsoft Office 365, GoFileRoom,
• tax research databases experience, such as: CCH, BNA & RIA Checkpoint as well as sales tax compliance software, such as: Avalara or Vertex
