Systems Administrator II

Apogee Research is seeking a Systems Administrator II with broad knowledge across Networking, Windows, and Linux. This hands-on position will primarily be providing systems administration support and systems maintenance alongside the project engineering teams in order to customize and provided services to meet customer needs. The position is full-time, located in Arlington, VA. (Ballston Quarter area) Due to the nature of our business, any viable candidate must be a US Citizen.

Position Responsibilities:

• UNIX/Linux system administration including identifying and troubleshooting issues with permissions and user rights, networking, performance and responsiveness, and system functionality problems resulting from security hardening
• Coordinating with project engineering teams to understand their project needs, gather requirements, and customize provided services to meet those needs
• Manage a blended Windows/Linux infrastructure environment, including:
  • System deployment - Hardware assembly, OS installation and configuration, permissions configuration, and security hardening
  • System maintenance – Upgrades, patching, user management
  • System optimization - Monitor system performance and health to identify opportunities for performance improvement, implement system tuning
  • Automation - Scripting routine tasks using BASH, Python, Ansible, Kickstart, and PowerShell
  • Joining Linux RHEL machines to a windows domain
• Support and administration of security and management systems (switches, firewalls, domain controllers, virtualization stack) in accordance with expertise
• In-person, voice, and chat support to users for laptop configuration, network settings, hardware peripherals, and standard end user applications
• Routine audits of systems and software, including log analysis
• Support configuring of Linux Boxes for CUI compliance.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field, may substitute 4 years hands on experience for degree requirement.
• 5 years experience in systems administration and configuration management of an Enterprise IT environment
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Experience with multiple distributions of UNIX/Linux (Red Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu) in a production environment
• Experience in systems administration, including command line/shell experience in both Windows and Linux systems, as well as troubleshooting services and protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS, FTP, SSH, SCP, SSL, HTTP/HTTPS
• Ability to create, review, and maintain documentation of standard processes, identified solutions, and configuration profiles of both new and as-built systems
• Experience in implementing standardized security and compliance control systems, NIST 800-171 and NIST 800-53 experience strongly preferred
• Ability to prioritize workload and respond quickly to critical issues

Preferred Qualifications:

• Strong scripting background with Java, Python, or PowerShell a plus
• Experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting the following applications is a plus: VirtualBox, VMWare Workstation, SSL VPN clients, Adobe, Office365 tools and programs
• Configuring and maintaining Confluence, Jira, OpenStack, GitLab on Linux-based systems
• Knowledge of Docker and related swarm-based technology
• Administration of group policy on a Windows Domain Controllers
• Use of Devops tools to automate provisioning of systems and testing of code in a repeatable environment. (i.e., Ansible, GoCD or equivalent)
• Active TS clearance preferred
