The position of System EngineerGrid Code Compliance (“SE”) will be part of the Project Delivery Team and report to the Regional Manager of Project Delivery. The SE is responsible to oversee the Project Design (Electrical Design Package, Communication, and minor Software), Commissioning, and related Reporting. This role will also review project technical specifications and provide feedback to ensure that Grid Code and interconnection requirements will be met. Applicant should have a solid understanding of fundamental electrical engineering, project management and construction principals, as well as experience designing high power electrical systems. This position will be a member of Wartsila's internal and customer technical Subject Matter Expert Team for ESS Products and Projects and will work closely with the following groups: Software Delivery, Product Delivery, Project Management, Commissioning Manager, and other various groups to ensure ESS projects fulfil customer functionality and contract requirements.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of regional Grid Codes such as (CAISO, ERCOT, PJM), Canada (IESO), Chile (National Electric Coordinator (CEN)) etc.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to integrate compliance considerations into the design, development, and implementation phases, ensuring seamless alignment with grid requirements.
  • Work with Sales and Marketing teams to negotiate the technical aspects of contract negotiations and emerging market needs.
  • Assist with creating commissioning process documentation that clearly delineates the minimum requirements for the site to be approved by the grid operator.
  • Establish and maintain the engineering, design criteria and applicable standards and specifications for the ESS project.
  • Interface with external product vendors to understand the specification(s) and function(s) of their product(s) and service(s)
  • Specify appropriate system components, calculate component ratings and quantities, and create detailed bills-of material for energy storage projects.
  • Familiar with Power System Analysis; able to carry out steady state simulations of BESS designs to confirm system design meets applicable Grid Code requirements related to inverter parameters, BESS harmonic performance, etc.
  • Ability to travel to domestic and international project sites and/or vendors, should reside close to a major airport. Remote Work is possible but candidates residing near one of our office locations are preferred (Herndon, VA; Houston, TX; Emeryville, CA)

 

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum Bachelors or master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Power Systems Engineering, or equivalent work experience. 
  • 5 years of experience with renewable energy with distribution or transmission level Energy Storage Systems
  • Familiar with lithium-ion battery 
  • Familiar with relevant codes and standards for ESS and inverters (NEC, IBC, IFC, NFPA, UL, IEC) 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate highly complex engineering, construction, and operational issues
  • Experience with utility scale energy storage and renewable energy projects and products (bi-directional inverters, various battery chemistries, PV, wind turbines, flywheels, etc.).
  • Understanding of Inverter, Converter, Transformer, Battery, Circuit breaker, Fuse, AC/DC power supply electrical equipment.
  • Applicant should be able to explain in detail the electrical principals of voltage, current, real and reactive power, energy, charge, AC/DC voltage, single-phase, and three-phase power, and other fundamental electrical engineering concepts.
  • Applicant should be able to read and understand drawings of electrical controls. Especially single-line, three-line, fire safety systems, and communication diagrams.
  • Ability to configure and troubleshoot programmable logic controllers (PLC) and industrial electronic equipment (protection relays, inverters, BMS, etc.).
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

 

 

For applicants that reside in California, the salary range/hourly wage range is $100,842-187,278.

 

The amounts listed are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.  Eligibility to participate in: the discretionary incentive plan assigned to the level of position upon offer of employment; medical, dental and vision coverage, 401(k) plan and flexible spending accounts, subject to plan terms; Company-paid benefits such as life insurance, short- and long-term disability, subject to applicable waiting periods.  Paid time off (PTO) is accrued on a per-pay period basis in accordance with tenure in the Company; a new hire can expect 17 days per year. Twelve (12) Company-paid holidays.
