Description

The Controller plays a critical role in day-to-day management of the Bank's Accounting/Finance function. Under the general direction of the Bank's Chief Financial Officer (CFO), this individual will contribute to or manage various accounting related functions including monthly reporting and account reconciliations, preparing financial statements, accounting analysis, financial data analysis, budgeting, accounts payable, fixed assets, and financial audits. This individual is expected to provide leadership, training, and guidance to other employees in the department. 


Supervises 

Accounting Department exempt and non-exempt staff.


Essential Functions

1. Plans, manages, and oversees the accounting and financial reporting function for the Bank; and directs the Bank's accounting principles and practices.

2. Ensures that record systems and procedures are maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.

3. Manages daily financial activities and administration of the accounting department including daily review of financial position, and reviews daily correspondence.

4. Assists the CFO in management of treasury function, including asset/liability management; daily management of the Bank's investment portfolio; oversees daily maintenance of adequate liquidity position; managing the Bank's interest rate derivative portfolio; and assists in establishing interest rates for deposit products.

5. Reviews and prepares monthly board package and actual vs. budget of financial statements.

6. Ensures that record systems and procedures are maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.

7. Supervises assigned accounting department staff; ensures a competent, motivated staff through hiring, training, counseling, supervising, and reviewing performance of employees.

8. Assists the CFO in the preparation of the Bank's annual budget.

9. Acts as a liaison to regulatory agencies; coordinates scheduling external audit and preparation of the annual report; reviews a variety of regulatory reports including call and Federal Reserve reports.

10. Serves as a liaison to functional leadership across the organization, assisting them with accounting related service issues.

11. Interprets financial transactions and events for users who must make economic or business decisions.

12. Conducts tax planning and reporting including preparation of consolidated federal and state returns in compliance with established regulations.

13. Manages the accounts payable functions. 

14. Manages the Bank's contract management process for all significant bank-wide contracts.

15. Manages the Bank's facilities via external property managers and vendors and internal staff.

18. Other duties as assigned. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting and a minimum five to seven years of related experience, including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or current pursuant of CPA license is preferred.
  • Previous accounting experience in the banking industry is preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of GAAP.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Exceptional multi-tasking and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and prioritize accordingly while meeting deadlines within a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong data processing experience and skills; including thorough knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex or ambiguous situations.
  • Shows initiative and demonstrates a willingness to take ownership and drives improvements independently.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy. Knowledge of Federal, State and municipal laws and statutes as they apply to financial reporting.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
