Position Description
Are you a person who has experience developing and growing relationships, decarbonizing building energy systems, managing projects and proposing innovative solutions? The Sustainability office is seeking a full time, Sustainable Building Performance Coordinator focusing on commercial and industrial building decarbonization as part of the Division of Sustainability, Healthy Homes, and the Environment (SHHE) in the Minneapolis Health Department. The position will report to the City's Sustainability Director and work with other city staff, community members, business owners, and institutions to support the implementation of commercial building energy audit recommendations. This position will also collaborate with Businesses, City staff, Consultants, other Cities across the country as part of a federally funded Innovation Hub that will provide technology and resources to business and property owners to achieve the City's net zero Green House Gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 goal.

Working Location: This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work with some days working remotely, in the office and in the field.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • As act as advisor and resource to commercial and industrial building and property owners to help them implement energy audit recommendations.
  • Develop, monitor, and measure environmental performance of the City's commercial and industrial buildings using benchmarking and best practices.
  • Project manage multi-disciplinary teams on drafting work plans, facilitating meetings, building consensus on recommendations, and preparing reports and presentations.
  • Develop relationships with external business and nonprofit organizations.
  • Bring creativity and innovation to address problems and find solutions.
  • Collaborate on new energy solutions with BIPOC business and property owners.
  • Develop work plans and collaborate with communications team on outreach and engagement.
  • Represent the City of Minneapolis in a multi city innovation hub planning process being supported by the Institute for Market Transformation (IMT) as part of a federal Department of Energy (DOE) grant.
  • Create awareness of and promote resources available to business and property owners through the City Green Costs Share program, State programs, and Federal incentives.
  • Develop content for commercial decarbonization website pages and develop education materials for property and business owners.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in energy efficiency for buildings technologies
  • Support SHHE Division policy efforts at the MN Public Utilities Commission and the Clean Energy Partnership
  • Aid and support efforts to develop resilience hubs.
  • Prepare and make presentations to groups, residents, and elected officials.
  • Participate in annual training and development.
  • Participate in the Urban Sustainability Directors Network and other external coalition partners.
  • Other duties as assigned

Working Conditions: Normal office setting and field work.
Required Qualifications
Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Sustainability, Physical Science, Natural Science, Biological Science, Urban Planning; or equivalent.
Minimum Experience: Five years of professional experience, including working in sustainability, building energy efficiency, environmental management and outreach, and/or climate change.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Selection Process: The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.

If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate's education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.

Eligible List: The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Professional experiencewith energy efficiency, renewable energy and building energy systems, commercial property management and Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Outgoing and results orientated.
  • Experience with building energy systems and technologies.
  • Familiarity with building decarbonization strategies.
  • Strength in building relationships internally and externally.
  • Ability to plan and manage project schedules with multiple players and diverse issues.
  • Good financial spreadsheet and analytical skills.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to understand policy implications of issues and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Preferred certification as an energy manager and LEED Accredited Professional.
  • Preferred knowledge of contract and grant proposal preparation and management.
  • Supervisory skills a plus
