We are looking for a Survey Project Manager to join our team in our Phoenix/Tempe location!

General Summary: The Survey Project Manager will direct, plan, coordinate, and oversee staff who conduct all variations of land surveys and demonstrate a more comprehensive knowledge of surveys and field operations. This shall include but is not limited to independent judgment, communication, and supervisory abilities. The individual in this position is well versed in the day-to-day operational functions of the field survey teams. This person possesses advanced technical and supervisory skills. Work elements listed below further describe the requirements related to this position.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Schedules, organizes, and oversees the work of field surveyors.
  • Oversees the development, maintenance, planning, and preparation of surveying procedures, systems, and projects.
  • Reviews the work of staff to ensure that surveying principles are correctly applied, calculations are accurate, and work is compliant with the Arizona Professional Land Surveyors Act, the Subdivision Map Act, and other applicable local, state, and federal laws, guidelines, and standards.
  • Collaborates and coordinates with civil engineers, Project Managers, and other employees regarding field surveys.
  • Provides input on construction survey related proposals and track project budgets.
  • Drafts, maintains, and implements standards and guidelines for field surveying staff.
  • Promote First Aid & Safety
    • Have a basic knowledge of treatment practices for a variety of medical emergencies.
    • Have a general knowledge of traffic control and safety procedures for a variety of surveying and construction operations.
  • Supervise Field Staff
    • Have a comprehensive knowledge of and familiarity with client contacts, dealing with the public and governmental agencies, field crew management, scheduling, equipment, and supplies management.
    • Have knowledge of on-site office operation, office workflow procedures, and field and office problem solving techniques.
    • Be able to evaluate personnel performance and perform basic budgeting and cost control techniques.
    • Have ability to train personnel in all aspects of field surveying practices.

Other Responsibilities

  • Ability to: assign, prioritize, schedule, and delegate work; explain technical concepts to others; provide constructive feedback; direct, train, and evaluate the performance of staff; enforce safety practices; work independently; read and interpret engineering plans; collect, calculate, and adjust mathematical computations such as distances, traverses, and elevations; analyze data; operate and maintain complex precision surveying instruments, engineering calculators, and personal computers; perform difficult algebraic, geometric, trigonometric, and precise engineering calculations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with County staff, engineers, developers, contractors, and the general public.
  • Draft proposals, change orders, invoices and progress reports.
  • Provide general, complex, detailed, and technical information to a variety of clients and sub consultants, including the general client, team, public, professional, and technical co- workers, developers, and elected officials.
  • Communicate directly and effectively with customers under demanding conditions that include high work volume, firm deadlines, confrontational situations, disputed interpretations, and complex explanations to individuals with diverse levels of technical expertise. Develop, prepare, and present plans, reports, supporting documentation, and presentations.
  • Read, understand, interpret, and analyze complex regulations, standards and a wide variety of information related to planning and environmental issues available in a wide variety of formats.
  • Analyze a variety of information or issues and effectively use independent judgment in interpretation of information, decision making, problem resolution, and compliance requirements.
  • Conduct field visits and inspections at construction sites and a wide variety of outdoor locations by safely navigating all types of terrain, potentially hazardous sites, and in all weather conditions.
  • Travel to and participate in a variety of meetings, public hearings, conferences, seminars and related activities throughout local and regional area that may occur on evenings or weekends.

Education or Formal Training:

  • Registered Professional Land Surveyor and/or 10 years of experience in public and private sectors.
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer at times.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds at a time over rough terrain.
  • Must be able to dig holes, pound stakes with hand tools, and clear vegetation when needed.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and terrain.
