Job Summary
Are you in college and looking for a summer opportunity filled with hands-on field work experience, independency to manage your own daily work schedule and mentorship by a qualified and skilled professional in their field? Then working for the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) may be the opportunity for you.
MnDOT's Office of Land Management provides information and support for MnDOT's Geodetic Survey Control Monuments, Photogrammetric projects, products and services and Right of Way mapping and department-wide survey standards. The Geodetic Unit establishes and maintains horizontal and vertical control for all MnDOT projects statewide. Develops and provides technical support for new technology in precise surveying and mapping applications and provides technical support for Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Land Information systems.
We are looking to fill 10 full-time, temporary Survey Crew Student Workers for an anticipated duration of four months from May 2024 - August 2024.
In this position, you will have the unique opportunity to:
  • Be a member of a Survey Crew performing reconnaissance, monumentation and horizontal and vertical control field surveys.
  • Utilize GPS to ensure that work is completed accurately and efficiently.
  • Use leveling equipment.
  • Ensure that all work comply with National Geodetic Survey (NGS) and MnDOT specifications.

Field surveying requires overnight travel to various worksites in a variety of weather conditions. Travel expenses while on-the-job are covered/reimbursed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation. These positions will work 4 10-hour days, Monday - Thursday, and will stay in motels 3 nights per week.
**MnDOTdoes not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Applicantsmust be current students in a secondary, post-secondary, or graduate school and demonstrate the following:
  • Mathematical and drafting skills sufficient to complete required note checking and office processing of geodetic data.
  • Ability to understand survey equipment including the operation of digital level equipment, personal computers, and GPS receivers.
  • Human relations skills sufficient to maintain good morale and a working relationship with other members of the crew.

Applicants must be a student in a college/university, trade, or technical school. If a student is enrolled at a credit-granting institution he/she must carry at least six semester (nine quarter) credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one that only offers one credit per class, a student must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load shall be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Education Verification form prior to appointment.
Physical Requirements
In this job, the employee may be required to work outside exposed to all of the weather elements. The employee will occasionally drive a motor vehicle in off-road conditions. Periodically, the employee will walk on uneven/sloping ground. The employee must frequently and continually rotate through various body positions. The employee will operate machinery and testing equipment under varying temperatures. The employee may occasionally move up to 10-25 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying equipment. Periodically, the employee will push and/or pull carts, dollies, and two-wheel trucks. The employee must wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
