GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Surgical Team members, responsible for the handling or surgical instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during general surgical procedures. Ensures understanding of assigned surgical procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the assigned surgical team. Also provides service support related to patient preparation, patient transport, building services and assisting surgical care team with specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Scrubs on general surgical procedures.
2. Prepares operating room by setting up table, instruments and supplies according to
type of surgery.
3. Assures proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use and reports
needed repairs appropriately.
4. Follows established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality
assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
5. Displays cost-consciousness in the opening of sterile supplies and in the care and
handling of surgical instruments.
6. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures and notifies
the appropriate people.
7. Makes necessary supply deliveries to unit and ancillary departments
8. Maintains a safe and clean room environment; keeps room free from clutter, cleans
and stocks rooms, returns equipment and supplies to designated storage locations,
helps maintain cleanliness of assigned areas.
9. Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients by demonstrating sensitivity
to patient's care and privacy.
10.Maintains confidentially of patient and department care information.
11.Participates in discussions with the Unit Manager/Supervisor regarding job
enrichment and career progression.
12.Completes required education in a timely manner and participates in on-going
department specific educational programs.
13.Actively participates in audit monitors and department task forces.
14.Supports administrative and department governance changes to job role and
operations.
15.May train/precept new employees in the Surgical Technologist l role within core
assignment
16.Completes required education in a timely manner and participates in on-going
department specific educational programs.
17.Assist RN in admitting, transferring and discharging patients from the OR.
18.Assist leadership in adjusting par levels for efficient supply management.
19.Recognizes and participates in continuing education.
20.Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
- Graduate of Surgical Technology program accredited by CAAHEP, Dept. of Education, or Council on Occupational Education (COE) required.
- One year of Surgical Technologist experience preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES:
- Current BLS certification required or become BLS certified within one month of start date.
