JOB SUMMARY:
The Surgical Scrub Technologist is responsible for the provision of patient care to meet identified patient outcomes and to achieve the goals of the facility as directed by the Registered Nurse. The Surgical Scrub Technologist will also function as a Certified Scrub Technician.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Correlates clinical data.
  • Communicate with patients, families, teammates, physicians, other members of the healthcare team, etc.
  • Delivers safe patient care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of specific responsibilities in all emergency situations.
  • Demonstrates ability to respond to patient care needs in an emergency situation and under direction of Clinical Leader / Registered Nurse.
  • Initiates and implements basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS) under the direction of the Clinical Leader / Registered Nurse.
  • Functions as a Certified Scrub Technician in the operating room / procedure room under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
  • Displays a caring and responsive attitude and conducts all activities respecting patient, family, and employee rights and expectations.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all facility and patient information as required by facility policy.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • Overtime may be required based on business needs.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS (Experience, Skills and Education):
  • Graduate of a recognized and accredited Operating Room Technician Program.
  • Current Surgical Technologist certification.
  • Successful completion of BLS course within 90 days of employment or documentation of current BLS certification.
  • Prior experience as an ORT, preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service.
  • Ability to work independently and carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.

ADDITIONAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES (Based on Experience and Business Need):
Surgical Technician Level I
Non-Certified or Certified
  • Scrubs and performs sterile processing
  • Independently performs opening and closing duties
  • Appropriate supplies are readily pulled and in OR

Surgical Technician Level II (same as Level I plus):
Non-Certified or Certified
  • Inventory management
  • Assists with team huddles and scrub room assignments
  • Mentor to new staff

Surgical Technician Level III (same as Level II plus):
Certified
  • Assists Registered Nurse with Infection Control measures and reports
  • Manages IOL consignments and orders
  • Performs and tracks monthly QA responsibilities
  • Assists and looks for ways to decrease baseline cost per case (CPC) by procedure type while meeting surgeon needs

ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS (OSHA Category 1):
  • Works in clean, well-lighted, ventilated, temperature-controlled patient care areas.
  • Works around equipment and machinery with moving parts.
  • Receives exposure to hot and/or cold temperatures, chemical vapors, communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and infections.
  • Has skin contact with solvents or other chemicals including but not limited to: alcohol, acetone, detergents, bleach and rubber, vinyl or latex gloves.
  • May encounter radiation hazards.
  • May suffer possible lacerations, scratches or punctures.
  • May suffer possible injury from confused, disoriented or combative patients, or minor injury from equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards:
  • Able to bend, stoop, kneel, squat or twist repeatedly using proper body mechanics.
  • Able to quickly stand from a sitting position repeatedly more than 75% of an 8-12 hour shift.
  • Pushes/pulls objects of 80 lbs. routinely and 250 lbs. occasionally.
  • Must raise arms above shoulder level routinely and frequently.
  • Carries 20 lbs. routinely.
  • Frequently walks up and/or down stairs and/or uses step stool as needed.
  • Demonstrates dexterity, coordination, and full range of motion in both hands.
  • Requires vision and hearing to be within normal range with or without correction.
  • Able to maintain skin integrity despite frequent hand washing and use of alcohol-based sanitizers.
  • Able to work a 10-12 hour shift if necessary.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance.
  • Must be in compliance with the requirements released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), the State of California, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and a variety of public health authorities and professional organizations.
