Job description

The Clinical Technician assists in the preparation of surgical invasive care procedures, i.e., surgical procedures, endoscopic procedures, etc. He/she may function as a sub-circulator under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. He/she is responsible for the care, cleaning, and maintenance of specialized equipment instruments, supplies, and sterilization equipment. Basic patient care functions are performed within established guidelines under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Basic computer knowledge may be utilized to schedule procedures, input procedural data, and assist with periodic statistics.

Area of Responsibilities
  • CARE AND COMPETENCY: Demonstrates knowledge of and maintains the integrity and efficacy of the sterile field. Utilizes instruments, equipment, etc., in an appropriate manner. Performs delegated sub-circulating duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to established national standards (AORN, TJC, SGNA, and ASPAN etc.) and or departmental policy. Provides for and assists with maintenance of the patients' privacy and safety. Responsive to patient need(s). Actions are timely and accurate to assure appropriate care is provided. Demonstrates knowledge of use, care, and handling of specialized instruments and equipment.
  • EDUCATION: Participates in continuing education as mandated per policy.
  • EVALUATION: Work outcomes demonstrate accuracy, accountability, and responsibility.
  • PATIENT ASSESSMENT: Participates in patient assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Provides input relevant to nursing activities that will assure appropriate care is provided based on identified patient need(s), the scheduled procedure, and the clinical status of the patient. Must be able to set priorities so that the necessary equipment, supplies, etc., are available for the scheduled procedure. Works with confidential information where the effect of any disclosure would be significant and possibly have adverse internal and or external effects. Acts as a patient advocate and assists the patient and or significant other(s) in becoming more independent in meeting their own health care needs.
  • TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES: Demonstrates ability to provide assistance with patient care at an acceptable independent level by considering the spiritual, biophysical, and psychosocial needs of the patient. Responsible for and assists with efficient and appropriate room turnover. Basic clerical duties, i.e., patient charges, compiling patient charts, etc. Acts as a preceptor for students and new employees. Demonstrates basic knowledge of patient scheduling system and telephone beeper system protocol, etc. Serves as a positive role model and team member of the division.

Compliance Statement
Employee performs within the prescribed limits of Tanner Health System's Ethics and Compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Hotline.

Considerable physical effort - Lifts, carries, or handles medium weight equipment, materials, or supplies most of day. Occasional physical effort with heavy objects (over 60 lbs.). Works in reaching or strained positions frequently.

Considerable - (About 75% of the day) Involved in exposure to dirt, odors, noise, or some work is performed with exposure to temperature/weather extremes/occupational risk and probability of coming into contact with blood borne pathogens, other potentially infectious diseases, or biomedical/bio-hazardous materials.
