Job description

The incumbent of this position oversees all content initiatives of the National Gallery of Art across multiple platforms and formats to drive audience engagement and, as the Editor in Chief, leads the full-scale publishing arm of the National Gallery of Art, reporting to the Deputy Director.

Qualifications:

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the SL-1083-00. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-15 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience (combined), equivalent in responsibility to the GS-15 grade level in the Federal service, overseeing all content initiatives of the National Gallery of Art across multiple platforms and formats.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates.

  1. Thorough knowledge of best practices in content strategy, publishing and branding. Thorough knowledge of the publishing industry, with emphasis on art museum and other scholarly branches of publishing. Knowledge of the profession gained through training, experience, and participation in organizations such as College Art Association (CAA), American Association of Museums (AAM), Association of American University Presses (AAUP), International Association of Museum Publishers (IAMP), National Museum Publishing Seminars (NMPS), and Museum and the Web.
  2. Comprehensive, intensive, practical knowledge of the English language, writing techniques, and editing procedures; command of the principles and strategies of effective writing, including argument, logic, organizations, style, and grammar, and ability to judge sound scholarship and address various audiences.
  3. Command of editing principles necessary to supervise editorial staff and to edit scholarly and general texts for accuracy, consistency, appropriateness, and grammar; research skills for verifying footnotes as well as creating and checking bibliographies and indices. Through working knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style.
  4. Knowledge of developments in digital production, website and mobile applications, and state-of -the-art processes that can support the Gallery’s content strategy.  
  5. Through knowledge of the print publishing production processes; familiarity with color separators, printing and binding vendors here and abroad, and digital services.
  6. Extensive knowledge of black-and-white, color, and digital photography, and ability to recommend specific printing processes to suit particular publications.
  7. Knowledge of federal personnel management procedures, including supervisory techniques, office organization, training methods, and career growth. Highly developed abilities and experience supervising such staff as editors, writers, researchers, designers, photographers, production and editorial assistants, peer reviewers, and freelance editors, proofreaders, designers, printers, and other technical publication experts.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education: Education

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Must have included a total of 15 semester hours in an appropriate scientific, technical, or social science field(s), and at least one course above the introductory level in the field(s) covered by the position. For technical manuals and specifications writers or editors, the equivalent of 15 semester hours may have been gained through vocational or educational training above the high school level at a public, private, or Armed Forces school.

Experience

General Experience (for GS-5 positions): Experience that provided an understanding of the basic principles, practices, operations, and specialized vocabulary of the appropriate scientific, technical, or social science field(s), or with equipment or technical systems. The applicant must have acquired the ability to describe information in simple, clear language.

Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience that required substantial subject-matter or technical knowledge of the field. This experience must have demonstrated the ability to acquire and present technical information through independent reading, interviews with subject-matter specialists, observation of tests and experiments, interpretation of blueprints or diagrams, or other appropriate methods. Such experience may have been acquired as a writer or editor of technical reports, articles, manuals, or specifications.
