Summary
The Supervisor/Manager, QC works within the Analytical Services department and is responsible for delivering high-quality sample analyses to support Production (both BSC locations in Mead and Longmont) and Pilot Plant in a timely fashion, utilizing quantitative and qualitative analysis. The Supervisor/Manager, QC ensures that appropriate analytical methodologies and instrumentation are used to perform all duties and proactively monitors preventative maintenance schedules to ensure equipment availability.
This role is a supervisory position with QC staff as direct reports. The Supervisor/Manager, QC is responsible for staff recruitment, training, and development to ensure a capable work force is available to support the needs of the business. Schedule for this role is Monday through Friday, with ability to work swing shifts or occasional weekends as needed. Level and pay will be commensurate with experience.
Job Responsibilities
- Supports an EHS culture for the Analytical Services team and the BSC business, reviewing QC Chemist activities, proposing opportunities to improvement, completion of all actions and including "safety moments" within all formal discussions
- Manages all QC Chemist actions relating to analysis of in process evaluation and final product activities from Production and Pilot Plant to ensure results are delivered with a high level of accuracy and in a timely fashion
- Recruits, selects, hires, coaches, and continuously develops the QC Chemist group, focusing on building capability and future talent
- Ensures appropriate staffing and scheduling for both Mead and Longmont QC whilst monitoring shift team scheduling to ensure complete coverage
- Oversees and monitors the training of QC Chemists to ensure BSC standards are met for each career level
- Evaluates the performance of QC Chemists, coaching and mentoring on a technical and behavioral level to help build team unity and cohesiveness
- Sets daily priorities in consultation with R&D, Pilot Plant, Production, Business Development, QA, and the Director, Analytical Services
- Independently and proactively identifies process gaps within Analytical Services and determines necessary remediation, including documentation, training, and equipment
- Can act as sole Analytical Services representation in troubleshooting Pilot Plant and Production processes
- Tracks information on issues identified during data reviews, determines root cause, and implements countermeasures to promote continuous improvement
- Reviews analytical standardizations and approves for use
- Participates in data review for raw materials, intermediates, and finished goods
- Participates in on-call reviewing
- Coordinates instrument PMs and PVs performed by QC Chemists and/or Analytical Chemists
- Notifies QA, Production, and Pilot Plant of out-of-specification results
- Holds QC Chemist meetings to discuss safety concerns and testing issues
- Participates in data review for in process samples as needed
- Represents the Director, Analytical Services in their absence
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or related field; minimum of 5 years of experience in hands-on Analytical Chemistry testing; and minimum of 2 years supervisory experience
Experience
- A minimum of 6 years of QC experience preferred
- Prefer experience supporting a 24/7 manufacturing operation
- Prefer experience in a chemistry laboratory environment
- Ability to respond to questions or issues to support a 24/7 operation (as an on-call reviewer)
- GC, NMR, Auto Titration, HPLC, IC, and ICP experience desired
- Familiarity with Preventative Maintenance and Performance Verification programs
- Working knowledge (including maintenance) of gloveboxes, fume hoods, ultrapure water systems, and compresses gasses
- Experience with Quality Management Systems and Lean/Six Sigma methodology preferred
Work Environment
This position will be working in a laboratory setting with potential exposure to hazardous chemicals. Proper PPE will be required at all times. Employee will spend extending periods of time standing. Must be able to move 25 lbs. without assistance.
