Supervisor, Organic Synthesis
This position is responsible for supervising the activities of Organic Synthesis laboratory personnel and resources to achieve the production schedule(s) safely, efficiently, and effectively. Areas of responsibility involve manufacturing of chemical related products. This is accomplished by ensuring that staff is adequately trained in the safe and efficient operation of all required equipment, facilities and processes with input and directives from the department manager. This requires a focus on safety, quality, and continuous process improvement.
This role requires effective day-to-day communication, collaboration, and resource coordination with the department manager, Production Planning, Purchasing, Analytical Services, Quality Assurance, Warehouse/Distribution, Facilities, Engineering, New Product Commercialization (R&D), Product Management, Finance, and other functional areas to achieve production objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Promotes and facilitates the safest working environment for all employees.
  • Leads by example including following all policies, demonstrating a strong work ethic and operational discipline.
  • Performs performance evaluations, writes PMDs, and evaluates goals for direct reports.
  • Mentors and coaches' direct reports by providing regular feedback, learning opportunities, and professional development.
  • Works with manager to establish, track and achieve both individual and department goals and key performance metrics (KPIs).
  • Effectively uses metrics to recognize improvement opportunities, remove production barriers, and drive team performance.
  • Works with Planning and Purchasing teams with department input to develop efficient production plans and ensures successful execution to meet customer needs.
  • Partners with manager, Engineering, Maintenance, and others, as needed, to drive equipment maintenance and improvements including submission and justification of capital requests, as needed.
  • Responsible for promoting department audit-ready production environment at all times and collaborates with Manager to address all audit observations including implementation of corrective and preventive actions as required.
  • Demonstrates role model leadership in 5S, Lean/PPI, and Kaizen principles and promotes within the department driving change when needed.
  • Collaborates with Research and Development and Product Management to facilitate introduction of new products and supports validation efforts.
  • Assesses and supports bulk custom production opportunities.
  • Initiates and leads investigations into product/process failures, customer complaints and safety incidents. Identifies, approves, and implements appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
  • Recommends and coordinates measures to improve production methods, quality improvements, and equipment effectiveness.
  • Identifies productivity savings, coordinate resources, and drives improvements to completion.
  • Partners with manager to create an annual operational budget for department including compensation, supplies, and equipment needs. Ensures budget adherence.
  • Promotes initiatives to improve and foster team building.
  • Serves as backup to manager for all meetings.
  • Completes work orders and other projects as needed.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, or related discipline.
  • 3 years of experience in a manufacturing or research laboratory (ISO or cGMP regulated manufacturing environment preferred).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated people leadership skills with previous leadership or supervisor experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and experience in chemistry. Organic chemistry preferred.
  • Must be able to work safely with chemicals and hazardous materials.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills both oral and written.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude preferred.
  • Possesses a passion for problem solving and process improvement.
  • Must be flexible to work varying schedules and hours as needed.
  • Ability to operate within generally defined procedures and practices under general direction and minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work with employees with varying levels of technical aptitude.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with both internal and external customers.
  • Experienced user of Microsoft Excel, MS Word and PowerPoint.
  • Consistent, dependable, and accurate execution of responsibilities.
  • Displays positive attitude toward job and others.
  • Maintains personal composure fast paced, high stress environments.
