Summary/Objective:
The Lab Supervisor plays a key role in supporting the high quality expected of High West's spirits and reports to the Sensory QA & NPD Manager. This role supervises the quality technicians and oversees routine lab responsibilities, including TTB compliance, sensory to support blend quality, analytical analyses, and general organization of lab functions to support operations. The Lab Supervisor is responsible for working with other production leadership to coordinate sensory needs and special circumstances.
Essential Job Functions:
- Identify safety needs to be reported to EHS; Comply with safety regulations and procedures and use of personal protective equipment for working in a hazardous environment and with hazardous chemicals
- Supervise two to three lab techs with the responsibility of providing input on the following: hiring recommendations, onboarding/offboarding, annual reviews, training programs, and disciplinary action
- Responsible for ensuring lab tech tasks are completed accurately and in a timely manner to support successful relationships with other relevant teams
- Oversee maintenance and calibration of lab instrumentation used to ensure blend and distillate quality and TTB compliance
- Leads instrument maintenance and troubleshooting and contributes to analytical analyses pertaining to GC and HPLC and maintains relevant inventory of chemicals and gases
- Contribute to sensory sign offs in conjunction with the Distilling or Blending Supervisors for bottling, barreling, tanker acceptance, Barrel Select, and non-whiskey component sensory
- Responsible for building historical data library of analytical results for HWD new make and analyze to identify patterns to be used to compliment production methods and distillate quality
- Coordinates hand off of new blends to traditional Quality team for determination of obscuration factors for TTB submission and compliance
- Collaborate with Quality team to oversee maintenance and calibration of lab instrumentation used to ensure blend and distillate quality and TTB compliance
- Work with Sensory QA & NPD Manager to identify appropriate Barrel Select samples to be pulled for evaluation at appropriate times
- Maintain SDS, SOPs, training proficiency, and instrument calibration logs
- Responsible for training new employees on lab distillations, use, maintenance, and proficiency testing of manual methods and analytical instrumentation
- Build relationships with 3rd party vendors to assist with sample requests, new make approval emails, bulk dump transfers, and instrumentation needs
- Under the supervision of the Sensory QA & NPD manager and working with the Blending Supervisor, propose and execute bulk dumps into off-site tank storage to ensure blend and product consistency
- Support sampling protocols to remain TTB compliant
- Participate in sensory training and maintain sensory competency
- Participate in continual education programs, as directed by manager, to enhance job performance and knowledge

Qualifications:
- At least 21 years of age
- Experience in a laboratory setting, 3+ years preferred

- Ability to work independently as well as in teams in addition to multi-tasking
- Experience with databases, spreadsheets, and word processing
- Ability to lift 50lbs, using safe lifting practices

- Physical Requirements: The employee frequently is required to sit, talk, and listen. The employee is occasionally required to stand; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. - Work Environment: Working conditions in certain areas of the distillery are cold, wet, slippery and noisy. Involves exposure to hazardous conditions.

The salary range for this role is:
$58,900.00 - $86,500.00
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting.
