Overview
Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC's 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary Mental Health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Supervising Mental Health Specialist for the Child Partial Hospital Program within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.
The primary purpose of the Supervising Mental Health Specialist is to participate as a member of a treatment team in providing care and services to children (age 17 years). Collaborates with the clinical and administrative leadership of the program offering comprehensive Mental Health care to children and their families. Primarily responsible for providing children care, leadership, training, and supervision to MHS II's, MHS III's and MHS IV's.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides training, clinical and administrative supervision to subordinate specialists in a professional and helpful manner.
  • Collaborates as a member of unit leadership by creating and maintaining a therapeutic program.
  • Takes initiative in engaging children.
  • Communicates with children in an empathic and concerned manner.
  • Provides appropriate management interventions in an effective and therapeutic manner.
  • Establishes and maintains boundaries and limits settings as appropriate to the needs and developmental level of the adolescent children.
  • Observes children's interpersonal behavior indicating knowledge of behavioral norms of each child's developmental level and participation and interest in their environment.
  • Obtains information, formulates and implements a wide range of interventions that best facilitate patients' well being and growth.

  • Assures completion of Basis 24 and Children's Behavioral Scale (CBS).

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant social, education or health care field, plus one (1) year experience in a relevant health care field.
  • Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement.

Certifications/Licenses
  • Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Previous experience with adolescents (ages 4 years - 17 years).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Activities, Art or Recreational Therapy.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical Demands: Employee must be physically active and be on feet most of the day. Duties may involve running and playing active games with children and adolescents (ages 4 years - 17 years). Following training, employee must be physically capable of safely providing personal and 4-point restraint to agitated children.
Work Environment: Crowded and moderately noisy conditions with children, adolescents, and staff moving about.
Special Conditions
  • Must undergo criminal history background check at employee's expense, as required by NJ State Law.
