Description
Under the direction of the Mountain Steward Supervisor, Bogus Basin's Mountain Steward Technician will perform invasive & noxious weed management, native seed collection, and erosion mitigation on both Bogus Basin and United States Forest Service Property (USFS). To ensure compliance within the USFS issued Special Use Permit (SUP), all weed spray application must be administered by or under the supervision of a licensed applicator. Application rates must be diligently recorded and reported to USFS personnel. When not working on invasive weed management, revegetation and erosion control efforts, this position will be working with the Grounds Crew members and Green Team to help implement sustainability related tasks (recycling program, etc.).
Essential Functions of the Job

  • Able to identify and differentiate between native and invasive/noxious plants at all stages of growth
  • Application of herbicide to control invasive and noxious weeds via backpack, four-wheeler, side-by-side and truck sprayers
  • Interpret and understand herbicide application rates, precautions, & restrictions (state & federal) set forth in documentation provided by the employer, USFS and manufacturer
  • Use hand tools to dig or pull invasive weeds when spraying is not applicable
  • Calibration of spray equipment to ensure proper application rates of herbicide in accordance with label or USFS Pesticide Use Proposal (PUP)
  • Use GPS units to create polygons of application areas and upload said data to include in reporting
  • Work with supervisor to ensure proper record keeping of all herbicide application on USFS and private property
  • Assist with new and post construction invasive/noxious weed monitoring
  • Build and maintain erosion control structures and features around the mountain (i.e. water bars)
  • Participate in revegetation efforts via reseeding and cutting propagation techniques
  • Use hand and power tools to assist in brush clearing along snowshoe trails
  • Assist with coordinating and communicating volunteers (if applicable)
  • Assist with a mountain wide recycling collection, sorting and tracking program.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements
Education & Experience Requirements
  • Some academic or professional background in ecology, rangeland management, botany/horticulture, conservation, outdoor education, leadership or similar field.
  • Preferred- Degree in rangeland management, ecology, biology, botany/horticulture or similar field preferred.
  • Preferred- Basic CPR/First Aid certification, Wilderness First Aid certification or higher.
  • Preferred- Hold ISDA Pesticide Applicators License

Physical
  • Consistently travel 2-12 miles per day on foot while transporting backpack sprayers weighing up to 50 lbs. on steep and uneven terrain (on and off trail)
  • Operate vehicles including vans, trucks, four-wheelers and side-by-sides

Working Conditions and Schedule
Environment
  • Majority of the time is spent outdoors for long periods of time in all weather conditions. Proper PPE (provided by Bogus Basin) must be worn while applying herbicide.

Schedule
  • This position is 40 hours per week. Schedule will either be M-F (8hrs/day) or M-Th (10hrs/day). Work will begin as early as May and continue through September. Start time is dependent on remaining snow on the mountain.
